Cowgirl throwers win Springfield event, Cowboys third

A number of Crook County High School throwers traveled to Springfield Saturday, March 23 for the Harvey Lewellen Throws Invitational, held at Thurston High School.

The Cowgirls came out on top of a five-team field, scoring 37 points, while Thurston finished second with 29 points and Springfield took third with 24. Meanwhile, the Cowboys were third in a six-team field. Cottage Grove took first with 37 points, while Thurston was second with 35 and Crook County was a close third with 32 points.

Thurston’s Bailey Tovey was the star of the girls meet, winning the shot put and javelin, while taking second in the discus. However, Thurston’s only other placer finished eighth in the discus, earning just one point. Meanwhile, Crook County used their superior depth to take the girls meet.

Paige Wood was the top Crook County finisher, taking second place in the shot put with a heave of 30-08.5. Also placing in the event were Sammy Miller, fifth with a throw of 27-08, Lucy Brooks finished seventh with a throw of 26-08 and Avery Chamness took eighth with a throw of 25-10.

Multiple Cowgirl throwers also placed in both the discus and javelin. Brooks took third in the discus with a throw of 93-07, while Isabelle Schmidt was seventh with a toss of 79-02, while Miller led the Cowgirl efforts in the javelin, finishing in third place with a throw of 86-04. Wood was right behind, taking fourth place with a toss of 85-10, while Schmidt was seventh with a throw of 77-00 and Eliana Williams finished eighth with a throw of 75-04.

The boys meet saw Ayden Gulseth score most of Crook County’s points. Gulseth won the shot put with a heave of 46-01.75, finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 114-11, and picked up a fifth place finish in the javelin with a toss of 120-09. Michael Estes also had a solid day for the Cowboys, finishing fourth in the shot put with a heave of 42-01 and sixth in the javelin with a throw of 120-05. The final Cowboy to place in the meet was Brysen Lorensen, who finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 132-09.

Thurston’s Zane Becker won both the discus and javelin and finished fifth in the shot put to lead the way for the Colts, while Cottage Grove’s Eli Williams was second in all three events to lead the way for the Lions.

A small group of Crook County athletes will compete at the Summit High School decathlon/heptathlon meet Friday and Saturday, March 29-30. The team will return to full track and field competition Wednesday, April 3 when they travel to Caldera High School for a three-way meet with the Wolfpack and the Summit Storm. Field events are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. with running events to start at 3:30 p.m. Crook County then travels to Coos Bay for one of the biggest meets of the season, the Prefontaine Rotary Invitational, which will be held April 6 at Marshfield High School.
