Good Food and a Gracious Smile: RJ’s “Mrs. Libby” has lived a life of hospitality
For 36 years, Libby Rowe Lewis (known to many as Mrs. Libby) was one of those familiar faces who helped make RJ's Grill more than a restaurant. She was part of the experience: welcoming customers, serving banquets and catering meetings, remembering faces, and making people feel at home. Opened and operated by longtime Statesboro businessman Randy Nessmith , RJ’s became a well-known gathering place in the Statesboro community, and for Mrs. Libby, it became a home away from home. “RJ’s was always special to me,” Libby shared. “My first job was waitressing at the Paragon, now Gnat’s Landing. Then I worked at Maryland Fried Chicken and a sewing plant, but I always knew waitressing was in my blood. That’s why RJ’s was so special: it brought back what I really enjoyed doing.” Libby began working at RJ’s Grill in 1988, spending 36 years in the building she came to know as a second home. Her years at RJ’s were about more than work. They were about the people she met, the friendships she made and the memories she carries with her. “It taught me hospitality,” she shared. “And I always said, ‘Keep smiling. It makes you and others feel better.’”
