    Sports Recap: Spring Lake Park sweeps Don Fineran Invite, Blaine's Sylvia-Cochran strikes out 15, St. Francis' Patton homers twice

    It was a clean sweep for Spring Lake Park track and field at its home Don Fineran Invite May 3, as the Panther boys and girls both took the top spot out of nine teams. Event-winners for the SLP boys included Jamal Smith in the 100, Julian Christensen in the 200 and in the long jump, Luke Ferenbacher in the 400, Reilly Kopp in the 1,600, Brady Paulson in the 300 hurdles, and the 4x200 relay. Runners-up included David Mueller in the 3,200, Sebastian Santiago in the pole vault, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x400 relay. Event-winners for the SLP girls included Ellyana Prairie in the 300 hurdles and in the high jump, Nevaeh Coffer in the long jump, Arabella Sutch in the shot put, Tiffanie Huynh in the pole vault, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x200 relay. Runners-up included Coffer in the 100, Adde Rohrer in the 1,600, Prairie in the 100 hurdles, Anja Erickson in the triple jump, Genevieve Dabout in the shot put, Sutch in the discus, and the 4x800 relay

    Coon Rapids hosted its home Coon Rapids Invitational May 3. Event-winners for the Cardinal boys included KhiJohnn Cummings-Coleman in the 100 and in the 200, Jerry Coleman in the 400, Sam Dennis in the shot put, Boluwatife Adeuga in the triple jump, Brayden Waldron in the long jump, the 4x100 relay, the 4x200 relay, and the 4x400 relay. Runners-up included Logan Barker in the pole vault, Devian Aluka in the long jump, Dennis in the discus, and Adeuga in the high jump. Coon Rapids’ Nyebol Jock swept the girls 100 and 300 hurdles, with the Cardinal girls’ 4x100 relay finishing as the runner-up. Columbia Heights’ Il m’aime Ntambwe won the girls triple jump.

    Blaine hosted its home Blaine Invitational April 30. Event-winners for the Bengal boys included Michael Douglas in the 100, Jamareon Douglas in the 200, River Santiago in the 800, Shiloh Ayitey in the high jump, Garald Ferguson Jr. in the triple jump, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x800 relay. Runners-up included Michael Olomiyele in the 100, Michael Douglas in the 200, Haevian Cole in the 400, Matthew Rivera in the 110 hurdles and in the 300 hurdles, and Tuulla Gemta in the triple jump. The Andover boys won five events, with victories by Tyler Flippen in the 1,600, Carl Anderson in the 110 hurdles, Shae Wyszynski in the 300 hurdles, Jackson Froslee in the pole vault, and the 4x200 relay. Finishing as runners-up were Aidan Gomes in the 800, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x400 relay. Coon Rapids’ Dennis swept first place in the boys throws, winning in the shot put and in the discus, and the Cardinal boys won the 4x400 relay. Finishing as runners-up were Barker in the pole vault, and the 4x200 relay. Totino-Grace’s Matthew Lindgren won the boys 3,200, and Josiah Young was the runner-up in the high jump.

    Event-winners for the Blaine girls included Aliyah Adepoju in the 100, Hope Dweh in the 200, Brynlee Wegener in the 3,200, Yvonne Marsh in the triple jump, the 4x200 relay, and the 4x400 relay. Runners-up were Grace Kowhegba in the 200, Katelyn Wozniak in the 400, Alayna Kurland in the 800, Wegener in the 1,600, Tessa Stephans in the pole vault, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x800 relay. Event-winners for the Andover girls included Payton McKnight in the 300 hurdles, Avah Shaw in the high jump and in the long jump, Isabella Novak in the discus, Jasmine Cummings in the shot put, and the 4x800 relay. Runners-up were McKnight in the 100 hurdles, Novak in the shot put, Mackenzie Jones in the discus, Abigail Lazan in the high jump, and the 4x400 relay. Coon Rapids’ Jock won the 100 hurdles and finished as the runner-up in the 300 hurdles, and Ruby Demmer was the runner-up in the 3,200. Totino-Grace’s Maria Morrison won the girls pole vault.

    Softball

    Kaelyn Polzin tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out 14 batters, as Andover outdueled Centennial 1-0 in nine innings May 7 to improve to 9-1 in the Northwest Suburban Conference. Maia Johnson had a pair of hits, and Morgan Kostecka scored the game’s lone run. Laci Heppell went 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs the day before in an 11-7 win over Elk River.

    Coon Rapids took two of three at a tournament in Becker May 4, defeating DeLaSalle 15-2 and Becker 5-4. Chloe Christie had three hits and scored twice against DeLaSalle, with two hits apiece by Ryanne Mellum, Myah Ruddy, Annalee Anderson and Laile Meyer. Mellum doubled twice and drove in four, and Meyer scored three runs. Ruddy also earned the win pitching, not allowing an earned run.

    St. Francis topped Monticello 3-2 May 3, then shut out Cambridge-Isanti 5-0 May 7 to improve to 6-2 in the Mississippi 8 Conference. Alexa Skogquist and Abby Keding each had a pair of hits against Monticello, and Sydney Borchert struck out eight batters in 4 1/3 shutout innings.

    Emmie Sylvia-Cochran fired a two-hit shutout, striking out 15, as Blaine shut out Brainerd 3-0 May 6 to improve to 12-4 on the season.

    Spring Lake Park earned a 6-1 win against Anoka May 6 to improve to 7-2 in the NWSC. Anoka earned an 8-5 win over St. Anthony May 1.

    Totino-Grace earned a 10-4 win against Fridley-Heights May 6.

    PACT reeled off three wins in a row, defeating Heritage Christian 12-0 May 3, Legacy Christian 21-0 May 6, and St. Croix Prep 8-5 May 7. Alayna Spiess recorded a no-hitter and drove in three against Heritage, and Brynn Shimek homered against LCA.

    Baseball

    Carson Nedland went the distance in a six-hitter as Anoka topped Grand Rapids 3-1 May 3. Logan Jaeger doubled and drove in two, and Hunter Brenner had two hits.

    Andover extended its winning streak to nine with a 9-1 win over Centennial May 7. Grant Pieri collected three hits and scored twice, Brett Buettner had two hits, Jackson Clough drove in two, Keaton Coe scored two runs, and Wyatt Myers allowed just one run over six innings pitched.

    Blaine tallied back-to-back wins, doubling up Eden Prairie 8-4 May 4, then shutting out Buffalo 9-0 May 6. Ethan Pettis had three hits and three runs against Eden Prairie, with two hits apiece by Ryan Burley, Carson Timm and Connor McLain, and two RBIs apiece by Lucas Godfrey and Carter Amelse. Nick Ulrich fired a five-hit shutout against Buffalo, with three hits apiece by Wilson Guse and Derek Schlomann, and two each from Carter Mackey and Matthew Plankers. Jerid Fearing allowed only one run over six innings, while Sammy Lee and Tommy Dutton both had two hits as Coon Rapids picked up a 4-1 win against Blaine May 3.

    Chase Patton homered twice, and Logan Granroth and Nate Kuznia also homered as St. Francis overpowered Cambridge-Isanti 15-0 May 7.

    Kennedy Capp had four hits and drove in three runs, and Ty Lovcik scored three times and knocked in three as Park Center/Columbia Heights/Maranatha outslugged Robbinsdale Cooper 12-9 May 6 to improve to 9-2.

    Solomon Kardell struck out nine with only one earned run allowed in a 6-3 Legacy Christian Academy win over Trinity May 6. Isaac Kersey-Schutta and Carson Anderson each had two hits, and Gavin Pratt drove in a pair.

    Spring Lake Park earned a 12-1 win against Zimmerman May 6.

    Totino-Grace clipped Minnetonka 3-2 May 4.

    Boys lacrosse

    Steven Axelrod and Ethan Burnette delivered four goals apiece to help power Blaine to an 18-9 win against Anoka May 1. Robert Cruikshank and Caleb Schwark each added three goals, and Mark Radtke scored twice.

    Kaleb Weikel struck for seven goals as Andover topped Owatonna 11-10 in overtime May 4. Luke Babineau made 17 saves.

    Nolan Hazelwood tallied six goals in a 14-10 win for Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids over Forest Lake May 6. Brody Herzog added three goals, and Toby Tranby scored twice.

    Girls lacrosse

    Cierra Ledeen netted three goals, Kiera Michael scored twice, and Olive Heugel recorded 23 saves to lead Blaine in an 11-7 win against Anoka May 6.

    Andover picked up an 11-4 win against Spring Lake Park May 1 to improve to 4-1 in the NWSC.

    Columbia Heights earned a 6-5 win against Bloomington Kennedy/Burnsville May 2.

    Boys tennis

    Blaine swept doubles play to edge NWSC foe Champlin Park 4-3 May 3, improving to 13-1 on the season. Winning in doubles were A.J. Fedor/Griffin Dunigan, Wyatt Gunderson/Noah Meyers, and Isaac Stahl/Franklin Loo, while Jaime Chamu provided the clinching win in a three-setter in singles.

    Coon Rapids picked up a 5-2 win against Andover May 3, while Andover defeated Totino-Grace 5-2.

    St. Francis edged Fridley 4-3 May 7.

    Boys golf

    Totino-Grace came away with the win in the fourth NWSC meet of the season at The Refuge April 30, with Spring Lake Park finishing as the runner-up, with Blaine earning seventh, Anoka earning eighth, Andover earning 10th, and Coon Rapids earning 13th. Charlie Givens shot a 69 for Totino-Grace, with 70s by Peyton Savageau and Ben Appelhof. Chase Birdwell also shot a 69 for Spring Lake park, with a 71 by Jake Birdwell, a 73 by Ozzie Roloff and a 75 by Jayson Zenz. Jarek Mohr shot a 76 and Tyler Buffo shot a 78 to lead Blaine. Mason Carlson led Andover with a 75. Tyler Gandrud fired a 71 for Anoka. Oskar Berg led Coon Rapids with a 74.

    Girls golf

    Totino-Grace took first place in its pre-section meet May 2, led by medalist Caylin Cantwell, runner-up Kaitlyn Burstad, and Grace Raich in fourth.

    Raquelle Nelson was the medalist as Legacy Christian finished as the runner-up at the Monticello Invite.
