Students at Mead High School walk out in protest

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Students at Mead High School staged a walk-out on Monday in protest of the school's handling of a sexual assault investigation.

Dozens of students walked out of class on May 13 to voice concerns about how the school investigated members of the school's football team.

The sexual assault allegations stem from an incident last year during a football summer camp held at Eastern Washington University.

The alleged incident was captured on video and shows a group of boys dogpiling on another teen and laughing while holding him down.

A parent who initially contacted the school about the video reported "massage gun tools" being used on the teen being held down.

According to Mead High School, the school's Athletic Director learned about the incident in July 2023, but the school did not submit a complete investigation until eight months later.

Students involved in the protest said the investigation took too long.

"They got information on this back in June. They got video evidence back in February, and it's only getting spread around town now. We are just here to show support to the fact that our staff and people aren't doing what they should be. If there is protocol, go follow it. Don't just do nothing," said Mead student James Boyd.

No one involved in the incident has been charged with a crime.
