Free trees for your neighborhood, SpoCanopy planting trees for Expo '74 celebration

SPOKANE, Wash. - Volunteers have been planting trees all over Spokane, with the most recent batch being planted along the Appleway Trail in Spokane Valley.

These efforts are because of the SpoCanopy Expo Forestry Planting, where over 500 trees will be planted within the next week. This project is meant to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Expo '74.

The goal is to help the city of Spokane reach 30% average urban canopy cover by 2030. SpoCanopy said they are planting free street trees in low-income neighborhoods with low canopy coverage so that all communities have access to the benefits of street trees.

According to the Lands Council, urban trees keep our air clean, filter storm water and overall do more for the city than most people realize.

"We're doing this to make sure all neighborhoods across the city of Spokane have equal access to greenspace and they can receive the benefits of urban trees which are keeping our homes cooler and roads cooler providing beautiful green spaces that we can feel calm in and peace in," said Justyce Brant, a restoration coordinator with the Lands Council.

You can request a free tree of your own to be planted at your house on Lands Council's website .
