    Sparta Chess Club 2024 Honored at Township Council

    SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Chess Club was honored at the township council meeting on Tuesday, May 14 with a proclamation.  The club, created and led by coach Thomas Murray was formed as a non-profit organization in 2002.

    This year the program saw its first undefeated champion Brendan Wick win the U1200 with a seven game undefeated streak to earn the title. The team brought home the U1600 National Title competing against 90 clubs from across the country.

    Imad Panjwani was also undefeated and earned a fifth place finish.  Rowan Mendel won the individual UI1400 Speed Chess Championship.

    According to the proclamation the club has more than 50 members and has traveled to 17 states to represent Sparta in chess competitions. The proclamation also recognized  Griffin Brawer, Ian Bellush, Ayush Iyer, Vaiden  Pollard, Rowan Mendel, Brendan Wick and Imad Panjwani for their commitment and dedication to the club.

    “The majority of these players will be graduating this year and have been playing with the team since primary school. It has been a special journey for me,” Murray said in an earlier interview.
