SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KCAU) — South Sioux City will be holding a special election in July related to growing the fire department by three full-time firefighters.

The vote will be on whether or not an existing half-cent sales tax allocated for street and infrastructure will be split. This means 75 percent continues to go to those needs and 25 percent goes to public safety. City officials said the change would allow about $325,000 to go to public safety and be used to cover the cost of three more firefighters.

The vote is not for a new tax, and there would be no increase in the sales tax rate.

The special election will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
