ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — A St. Tammany Parish jury has found a Slidell man guilty in the case of a 2019 homicide.
According to the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office, on Thursday, May 2, 34-year-old Jules “Pop” Johnson was found guilty of what District Attorney Collin Sims called “revenge murder.”
Over the course of three days, the jury heard the details of the trial that explained that on May 19, 2019, around 1:30 a.m., St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of a shooting at Gloria’s Bayou Lounge on Salem Street.
According to documents, responding deputies said they found a man, identified as 33-year-old Melvin Webb, lying in the parking suffering from a gunshot wound to his head.
Webb was taken to a hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead after his arrival, according to deputies.
Surveillance video from the business was shown during the trial that, according to court documents, captured the murder as it happened.
The video revealed that seconds before the shooting, Webb was seen talking to a man when a second man, Johnson, approached them, fired a shot at Webb and then left the scene, according to the district attorney’s office.
Documents further state that Johnson is a five-time convicted felon.
Court documents listed several witnesses of the crime who identified Johnson, including Webb’s wife, who reportedly told the court that she had seen Johnson loitering across the street of their home for weeks before the shooting.
Through further investigation, detectives discovered the motive for the shooting.
On December 9, 2012, at the same Gloria’s Bayou Lounge, Webb’s cousin, Dwight Ambo, shot and killed Johnson’s father, Sherman Deas, after Deas was accused of harassing two females at the bar.
After Ambo killed Deas, Webb assisted Ambo in eluding authorities. Consequently, Webb was charged with being an accessory to the homicide and served a prison term after being convicted of the charge in 2014.

Testimony during the trial revealed Johnson was known to drive a brown or tan Cadillac or Lincoln. Detectives were able to trace the movements of a Lincoln Town Car, registered to Johnson’s grandfather.
With the help of automated license plate readers (ALPR) the town car was captured heading west on Interstate 12 near Covington just 30 minutes after the shooting, according to court documents.
On June 11, 2019, detectives found and arrested Johnson at a sports bar in Marietta, Georgia.
Johnson is set to be sentenced on June 10 and faces the possibility of life for the murder charge.
