SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) – A dog apparently stolen last week from a vehicle parked at the Whychus Canyon Preserve trailhead was found deceased Friday a few miles away, "likely due to the elements," Deschutes County sheriff's deputies said.

"Tragically, Grisha has been located deceased a few miles from where she went missing," Sergeant Jason Wall said in an update. "As a result of the investigation, the cause of death does not appear to be suspicious in nature and is likely due to the elements."

Wall said the sheriff's office got the report shortly before 11 a.m. when the dog was found 2-3 miles from the trailhead.

"Our thoughts go out to Grisha's owner and all who knew her," Wall added.

Deputies were seeking the public’s help a week ago to find the dog stolen from a crate in a vehicle parked at the Whychus Canyon Preserve trailhead.

The dog owner had parked in the shade at the preserve, northeast of Sisters, and while walking two other dogs secured their 8-month-old Belgian Malinois – a breed often used by law enforcement as K-9s – in the crate, Wall said.

The dog owner returned to find that someone had opened the vehicle and removed the dog.

Wall said Grisha had access to water, and the windows were lowered to allow air flow. Grisha was wearing a black collar and us micro-chipped, the sergeant said.

“Grisha is well-mannered and responds to her name,” Wall said, as DCSO requested the public’s help in finding the dog.
