Forest snubbed as three Marion County teams make FHSAA football playoffs

The FHSAA state football playoff brackets are out. And one of the feel-good stories of Florida high school football this fall is not part of them. Forest, coming off its first eight-win season in nearly two decades, was knocked out of the Class 5A bracket by a team it beat during the regular season and has yet to beat a team with a winning record in 2026. Instead of John Brantley and the Wildcats getting in, it's 5-5 Oakleaf grabbing the eighth and final spot in Region 1 and headed to Mandarin next week. Forest beat Oakleaf 21-7 in a district showdown in October, seemingly giving it a leg up in the playoff chase. But a final-game loss to city rival Vanguard by a touchdown apparently was too much for the Maxpreps computer rankings, which has Oakleaf nearly 50 spots above Forest for the season. So happy for this team and group of Seniors!! Father Lopez scores with 7 seconds left to defeat Lake Highland Prep in makeup game

DAYTONA BEACH — Father Lopez had less than a minute to drive 62 yards to beat Lake Highland Prep in a makeup game on Nov. 4. The Highlanders had taken a 16-14 lead with 5:17 remaining on a 30-yard field goal and had just blocked a 23-yard attempt by the Green Wave on their previous drive. But after Lake Highland Prep failed to pick up a first down, Father Lopez got the ball back on its own 38-yard line without a timeout. It wouldn’t be denied. Watch FHSAA football on NFHS Network Colt Davis hit Adam McCloud on a toe-tap reception down the sideline to put the Green Wave on the edge of the red zone. Davis then ran it 15 yards to Lake Highland Prep’s 6-yard line. Father Lopez spiked it. The Green Wave had already missed three field goals Wednesday night, including one from the same yardage on the previous drive. There were 11 seconds left, so Father Lopez opted to throw a pass to the end zone. McCloud ran a whip route that beat his man, and Davis fired it on target. With the ensuing two-point conversion, Father Lopez led 22-16 with seven seconds left. That’s where

Growing traffic in Oviedo creates challenges for UCF commuters

For Micah Kovach, getting to a 9 a.m. class at UCF means leaving home an hour early to account for traffic, parking and the walk to class. Kovach, senior optics and photonics major, said his commute from home to campus typically takes about 45 minutes, including finding parking. When he first moved farther away from campus, 25 miles, he underestimated how long the school trip would take.

Trinity Catholic volleyball falls to Northside Christian in championship heartbreaker

WINTER HAVEN — Jeff Reavis acknowledged Trinity Catholic volleyball couldn't get much closer to a state championship than the Celtics did on Wednesday. And that's what made it so heartbreaking. "That fact is the hardest because we had our opportunities," Reavis said. "We were resilient though and showed a lot of fight." Ultimately, it wasn't enough though. A season four years in the making for Trinity Catholic volleyball 's six seniors ended two points short of the ultimate prize. The Celtics fell in five sets Wednesday, Nov. 4 in the FHSAA Class 2A State Championship to St. Petersburg-Northside Christian at Polk State College in Winter Haven, falling in the fifth set 15-13. It is TC's second defeat in the final match in the last three seasons. Nothing about Northside Christian surprised Reavis. The No. 16 team in Florida features three players at six feet tall or over, including 6-foot-2 Aaliyah Cancellari (Oklahoma commit) and 6-foot-3 Candice Holloway (Syracuse commit). That height caused problems early on for the Celtics and caused the Mustangs to play more relaxed and less timid. "They were a really formative team with a bunch of good athletes, and they made it hard on us," Reavis said.

South Lake High Vs South Sumter Football Game Results (10/30)

The Eagles scored a major victory on senior night defeating South Sumter High school 24-20. It was a very physical game and the Eagles put together their best performance of the year dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Raiders scored first after the Eagles did not convert on a 4th down from their own 40 yard line early in the second quarter. The defense for the Eagles after that score really picked it up flipping field position and getting the Eagle offense back on the field at the end of the second quarter. Sam Wood would explode off the left side for a 17 yard touchdown run behind some great blocking from Mark Elder, Landon Coning, Andrew Carter and Brian Bedingfield. The half would end tied 7-7.

Hagerty Could Leapfrog Lake Brantley in Playoffs Despite 56-0 Blowout Loss

Lake Brantley beat Hagerty by 56 points on October 30, and yet Hagerty could still end up ranked ahead of the Patriots when Florida High School Athletic Association playoff brackets are unveiled Friday. The twist comes courtesy of a new ranking formula in its first season of determining postseason seeding statewide, and it has coaches across Central Florida grumbling about an algorithm most of them don't fully understand.

Lakeland football turns showdown with First Academy into a rout

LAKELAND — Lakeland’s goal for the regular season was to clinch a spot in the Open Division. The Dreadnaughts, holding onto the No. 8 spot entering the game, likely clinched a top-eight finish, and made a loud statement in the process. It was as close to a near-perfect game against an elite opponent that Lakeland could expect as the the Dreadnaughts finished year another game with a running clock. Lakeland’s defense dominated from the start and the Dreadnaughts moved the ball at will en route to a 35-0 victory over Orlando First Academy on Friday night at Bryant Stadium. “Lakeland’s here to stay,” senior defensive lineman Santana Harvey said. “We’re back. It was just another day at the office, and we have to keep working, keep playing and keep doing out job at pactice.” Lakeland won’t know officially if it made the Open Division until the playoff brackets are announced at 5 p.m. on Friday on the FHSAA’s YouTube channel. The performance was a fruition of what Lakeland was building toward all year, beginning with its season-opener against Venice. “We kind of schedule for moments like this,” Frazier said.
