A Front Yard for All: The Grand Opening of Allegheny RiverTrail Park’s Expansion
A Front Yard for All: The Grand Opening of Allegheny RiverTrail Park's Expansion. "Other duties as assigned" is par for the course for Tony Miga, director of operations at Allegheny RiverTrail Park (ARP), a public park managed by an independent, nonprofit organization. Thanks to the nonprofit's hard work, ARP successfully provides free public access to parkland and multi-use trails that stretch alongside a Aspinwall–Sharpsburg section of the Allegheny River. The park is not supported by taxpayer dollars, which is why fundraising is crucial to the park's existence. Tony likens the organization to a public radio station, which provides a service to the community using donations from community members and benefactors. He notes that "not too many parks operate in this way." On any given Tuesday, Tony can be found rustproofing the docks, consulting a bride about her wedding or even scheduling Geese Police maintenance (dogs used to discourage geese from overtaking the park).

I ate my way through Pittsburgh's doughnuts — here are the best ones
At its (hollow) core, a doughnut is a deeply personal thing. When I think of an exceptional doughnut, it must check off certain technical criteria, sure — the flavor needs to be right, the fry has to be delicate but still perceptible, the texture should be airy for yeast doughnuts and moist for cake — but it also has to feel right. Does it elevate my morning coffee? Will it make a coworker’s day? Do I feel like I’ve been treated to something delightful, or merely consumed something sweet, but forgettable?
"Love Your Wild Neighbor" mural debuted on the South Side
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A new mural has been unveiled on the South Side with the goal of pushing protections for wildlife in Western Pennsylvania. The new mural is called "Love Your Wild Neighbor" and it was commissioned by Humane Action Pittsburgh. It shares the same name with a Humane Action Pittsburgh campaign that aims to educate community members on ways to coexist with the animals that also call our region home. Local artist Jeremy Raymer was called to paint the mural. It can be seen in the parking lot of the corner of East Carson and South 28th Streets. The mural comes out at a time when bear and other animal sightings have been on the rise as the weather gets nicer. Recently, KDKA's John Shumway spoke with a former Game Commission officer about those furry friends. "Stay in the house, pull out your phone, and start taking a video [and] take some pictures. Consider yourself lucky that you actually saw a black bear," he said. You can read the full story right here!
