Newport hosted Regatta, April 20-21
High schools in the Pacific Northwest participate in sailboat racing as part of the Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association (NWISA). Most of the teams participating are in the Puget Sound area of Washington. Oregon has three facilities where high school students can sail competitively: Newport, Hood Rand, and Portland. All are through yacht clubs that work with the schools. Newport High School (NPT) partners with the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club and the Oregon Boating Foundation to offer sailing to their students. Newport held a competition, called a regatta, here on Yaquina Bay on April 20-21, and 45 sailors from all three...

Letter: Vote Jenna Wallace for district attorney
No matter how many times Katherine Benfield mourns the good old days of good old boys, the class of deputy DAs she misses were mediocre at best. I literally volunteered my time as a prosecutor because the office back then lacked trial attorneys competent to prosecute violence. Lanee Danforth successfully recruited a highly skilled staff. Jenna Wallace is at the top of that class. There are fundamental differences in both background and approach between the two candidates for Lincoln County District Attorney. Benfield is a...

Kelsea Watts and Brandt Bernath after a Toledo Bend trip
Kelsea Watts and Brandt Bernath with some beautiful fish caught on Feb. 27 at Toledo Bend. “Feb. 27 started out as a slow day at Toledo Bend with a strong wind ahead of a small cold front. We left Palo Gaucho and headed to Six mile to get out of the wind. We started sac-a-lait fishing and caught 20 off of a point behind grass. Once the sac-a-lait bite turned off we headed to a canal a half a mile away and almost every cast had a bass hit the bait. From there we caught a 4.2-pound bass and a few other 2 pounders. We left Six mile around noon and headed to Palo Gaucho again to a small canal past the bridge and missed three fish, from there we started to sac-a-lait fish and caught another 15 right off the bank. Started to get close to dark when I had a gut feeling to go back to the first canal in Palo Gaucho and where I caught a 5-pound female on a down tree in the middle of the canal.”

Lincoln County chief deputy district attorney Jenna Wallace, left, and Newport defense attorney Kathryn Benfield are seeking election as district attorney in the May primary. Jenna Wallace hadn’t anticipated seeking election to become a district attorney. Not yet, anyway. Wallace has been a prosecutor in the Lincoln County district...
