Readers respond: Bring back Portland’s vitality
After living in Northeast Portland for over 50 years, I am so dismayed at the Portland City Council and Metro government, which seem to have abandoned this area. The prime example is the old Gordon’s Fireplace Shop that has been vacant for years. It is totally covered in graffiti, the structure is partly demolished and there are broken windows everywhere. I wrote to the commissioner responsible for these issues and received a boiler plate response - very disappointing. This structure needs to be leveled, with all debris removed. Secondly, there needs to be expedited permitting to build in that area. This is a prime example of the broken window syndrome.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a Washington County ordinance banning all flavored tobacco sales. Washington County commissioners approved Ordinance 878 in 2022, but it was not enforced because a circuit court judge overturned it. In his opinion, Circuit Judge Andrew Erwin wrote that prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco must come from the state, not the county.

CenturyLink left users with no service for two months, then billed them $239
Telecom provider CenturyLink left a couple in Oregon without landline phone service for two months, then sent a bill for $239.
