In the second round of the CIF baseball playoffs Tuesday, Hart, Valencia, Santa Clarita Christian School and Trinity Classical Academy entered with hopes of winning in their respective games, but only two came out victorious.

After a hard-fought battle against Newport Harbor, the Hart Indians emerged victorious, becoming the one of two Santa Clarita baseball team to advance further in the playoffs.

In their game, Hart scored the only run, giving them a 1-0 win over the Newport Harbor Sailors.

Hart pitcher Ian Edwards threw for a five-inning shutout utilizing his submarine pitching style.

When facing a right-handed submarine pitcher, it is more challenging for a right-handed batter to hit the pitch. The same holds true for left-handed pitchers and batters; submarine pitches tend to be the hardest for same-side batters to hit.

This happens because the spin of the submarine isn’t completely leveled; as it quickly descends through the zone, the ball rotates forward and toward the side of the pitcher’s arm, jamming hitters on the same side just in time.

Submarine pitchers are particularly rare, likely because of the unique way they throw.

The majority of pitchers use an overarm motion, which is the most natural way to pitch. Most coaches and trainers tend to teach their young pitchers to mimic this motion, while submarine pitching is more of a learned style than a natural one.

This technique proved effective because the Sailors could not get a single run.

With another win in the bag, Hart looks to continue their streak and send head coach Jim Ozella out in style as he completes his final season with the team after 25 years.

The Indians’ next trip to the diamond is Friday at 3:15 p.m. against Arlington.

    SCCS:

Out of the Heritage League the Cardinals have been red hot in the playoffs with two shutouts in both games.

To give off the CIF Division 8 playoffs SCCS beat Loma Linda Academy 3-0. They followed that up by beating California Lutheran 8-0 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals look to continue their streak on Friday when they host Azusa at 3:15 p.m.

    Valencia:

After an easy 7-1 victory in the first round, the Vikings faced a stronger opponent in Moorpark that was decided by a single run.

In the first two innings, the two squads traded a pair of runs to knot things up at two a piece.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth inning that Valencia took its first lead, going up 3-4.

But in a last-chance effort, the Musketeers scored a pair of runs in what would be the final nail in the coffin, earning them a 4-3 win.

    Trinity:

The Trinity Knights, who won the Heritage League Champion and went 19-0 in the regular season, saw their season come to a halt in the second round of the Division 5 CIF playoffs.

After having a first-round bye, the Knights rested and were ready to take on the Adelanto Saints.

The first three innings were fairly close, with Adelanto scoring only one run. At the top of the fourth inning, the Saints locked in and scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth inning that the Knights showed signs of life and scored a pair of runs. They carried their momentum into the seventh inning, but their late-game efforts weren’t enough, and they fell 5-3.

While they didn’t have the end to the season they were hoping for, Trinity has a lot to build on for the next season.
