Drinking Water Week has began and the City of Santa Clara is sharing tips for residents and the general public on how to save water.

Drinking Water Week highlights the importance of safe drinking water and recognizes the efforts of local water professionals who keep it flowing around the clock. The annual observance, which started Sunday and will end on Saturday, is nationwide and led by the American Water Works Association.

"This Drinking Water Week, please consider how you use the water brought to you by nature and delivered to you by the many people in our city and state who work tirelessly to ensure its safety and cleanliness," Santa Clara city officials said in a statement.

One way to save water is to rethink home landscaping as a way to conserve drinking water for essential uses, officials said.

In general, homeowners should water only from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., regardless of their city of residence; those who live in Santa Clara should be aware that outdoor watering is permanently not allowed in that city between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Using water-wise plants and California native plants is another effective way to reduce the amount of water used.

There are many approaches inside the home as well. Homeowners should fix leaks as soon as they are detected; install low-flow faucet aerators, shower heads and toilets; take quick showers rather than baths, and turn off the water while brushing teeth, washing or shaving. These tips apply to any homeowner, not just those living in Santa Clara.
