The 15-story UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital will open in 2030 at the university's flagship campus on Parnassus Heights.

The facility will increase hospital capacity by 37% to 682 beds. It will also add 21 operating rooms for a 43% increase in surgical capacity, and 31 emergency care beds, boosting capacity 71%, according to a press release.

UCSF said it will create 1,000 union jobs and invest $20 million in public transit improvements near Parnassus Heights, including $11 million to augment the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's N Judah line.

Backers of an Alameda County sales tax increase to fund child care are celebrating after a ruling by the California Supreme Court has finally validated the measure, four years after voters approved it.

Measure C passed with 64% of the vote in 2020 but was challenged by the Alameda County Taxpayers Association and others who said it needed two-thirds approval because it was a new tax.

In a ruling Wednesday, the court said the measure was a citizen-led initiative, not a lawmaker-sponsored ballot measure, and therefore needed only a simple majority to pass.

The 20-year half-cent sales tax increase is expected to generate about $150 million a year, proponents said in a press conference Friday.

A 42-year-old man was arrested in Piedmont after attacking an older man, forcing his way into a home and threatening the resident, then trying to steal the police chief's patrol car Friday afternoon.

Willie Gomer was sprayed with pepper spray and shot by a Taser, but it still took Chief Jeremy Bowers, several officers and a security guard to get him out of the police car and take him into custody, according to a police post Saturday on Facebook.

Officers responded at 4:23 p.m. Friday to a report of an unconscious man in Ace Hardware at 1221 Grand Ave. Witnesses said a man had randomly struck the victim from behind and fled next door into a garden center, police said.

The suspect eventually ran out onto Valle Vista Avenue where he confronted Bowers and jumped into his police car in a bid to escape, police said. The two fought in the car and Gomer was removed with the help of other officers and a security guard, police said.

The woman wasn't breathing when officers arrived, police said. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A suspect in the killing was gone when officers got to the scene, police said. The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

A 60-year-old San Ramon man who allegedly threatened to kill his wife was arrested on Friday after negotiations with a SWAT team.

A Central County SWAT team was called in. The team consists of officers from the San Ramon, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Martinez and BART police departments.

After more failed attempts to make contact by phone, Smith was ordered out of the house by SWAT officers. He surrendered after about 30 minutes, police said.

A driver who saw a pedestrian on a remote stretch of state Highway 1 lost his pickup truck on Friday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

The pickup's driver alerted the CHP after seeing the man on the highway near Davenport. When officers arrived, the pedestrian jumped into the truck and took off, police said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

Officers attempted to stop the pickup, but its driver evaded the CHP and fled into San Mateo County.

The CHP said the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office finally stopped the pickup by deploying a spike strip on the road to flatten its tires.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed introduced legislation that would waive city fees for certain community events--like farmers' markets, block parties and night markets-- and simplify health permitting for food vendors by creating an annual license, her office announced in a press release Friday.

Events that are free and open to the public, occupy three or fewer city blocks, take place between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., and have the appropriate permitting from the ISCOTT and the Entertainment Commission would be eligible for fee waivers. Current fees can range between $500 and $10,000 for events, without waivers.

Applicants for fee waivers must be a San Francisco based non-profit, small business, Community Benefit District, Business Improvement District, or a neighborhood or merchant association. Applicants are limited to 12 events per year for fee waiver eligibility.

Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to reduce hazardous fuels on a 16-mile corridor on Skyline Boulevard, located between Black Road in Los Gatos in the south and Page Mill Road in Palo Alto in the north. The plan is part of the Highway 35 Hazardous Fuels Reduction Wildfire Mitigation Project.

This portion of Skyline Boulevard serves about 5,000 residents and 2,703 structures, and is a popular commute route between San Mateo County and Santa Clara County, according to a Friday press release.

The project will be funded, in part, by $542K in federal funding from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) awarded to Santa Clara County. The grant program requires that the county match 10% of the funds, equalling about $57,046. The match requirement will be met using County Fire staff time, according to the press release.
