Things were already going poorly for the St. Louis Cardinals over the first several weeks of the MLB season. On Tuesday, they got even worse.

Catcher Willson Contreras, who had been one of the team’s few consistent hitters through its 15-20 start, left Tuesday’s game against the New York Mets with an injury to his left arm. The injury looked bad at the time.

Shortly after Contreras left the game, the Cardinals announced on Twitter/X that “Contreras was removed from tonight’s game due to a left-arm fracture.”

The injury occurred in the second inning. New York’s J.D. Martinez offered at a 2-1 pitch from St. Louis pitcher, Miles Mikolas. As Contreras went to catch the ball, his left arm got in the path of Martinez’s swing. Catcher’s interference was called, awarding Martinez first base. Contreras, meanwhile, was in obvious pain. The catcher was holding his left forearm and later wrist.

At the least, this will likely sideline Contreras for several weeks.

Contreras, in his second season with the Cardinals, has slashed .274/.394/.538 this season. His six home runs and 10 doubles both lead the Cardinals.
