NODAWAY COUNTY, MO — The Missouri Department of Transportation announced Friday afternoon that the U.S. Route 71 J-turn near 340th Street in Nodaway County is open. Crews have been working with Leavenworth Excavating & Equipment Company, Inc. since Aug. 10 to complete the project. Now that the J-turn is finished, motorists will no longer cross multiple lanes of traffic. Instead, those traveling on 340th Street will merge into the passing lane on US-71 and then make a U-turn in the direction they want to travel.

After a year in an iconic River Market space, a Kansas City deli and barbecue restaurant has decided to pack up. Car No. 551 — located in a 1940s streetcar dubbed “ Trolley Tom ” — served its last pulled pork sandwich at 426 Delaware St. on Sunday. There are a few things that contributed to the closure, owner William Jordan told The Star in an interview Tuesday. Business hasn’t been what he hoped. Foot traffic dipped during the World Cup and has only recently rebounded for him, he said. But a lack of accessible parking spaces was a notable hurdle, he said. “Parking is terrible,” Jordan told The Star. “The contract company that’s doing all the parking control for the city is overreaching.” “As soon as people park, they write tickets.” Sue Patterson, a spokeswoman with the City Market, sent a written statement in response to The Star’s questions about area parking. “We’re always sorry to see a neighborhood business close, and we wish Mr. Jordan well in his future endeavors,” Patterson wrote in part. “City Market offers free two-hour parking in City Market square (on Walnut Street between 3rd and 5th Streets) on weekdays year-round and on weekends

Bridge replacement to close lanes on I-435, NW Cookingham Drive
