ST. GEORGE, S.C. (WCBD)- The Town of St. George is looking for a new police chief after its longtime chief resigned amid an ongoing investigation, the mayor confirmed Thursday.

Mayor Kevin Hart told News 2 that he accepted the resignation of Chief Brett Camp, effective May 1.

“We appreciate his service to the town and its citizens,” Hart said.

The announcement comes just over two months after Camp was suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation by an outside firm.

No details were released regarding the nature of the investigation, but Hart previously told News 2 that he did not believe it involved criminal activity.

The town is currently accepting applications for the position, according to a March 7 post on the town’s Facebook page. The application period closes May 24 at 5 p.m.

Camp has served as police chief since 2016.
