Yaw, Hamm senior expo draws hundreds in Montoursville
Montoursville, Pa. — Hundreds of area seniors packed Community Baptist Church on Sept. 17 for a senior expo sponsored by state Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), and state Rep. Joe Hamm (R-84). “The amount of information out there for our older residents can be overwhelming,” Yaw said. “This free expo brought it all under one roof so our area senior citizens and their caregivers could ask questions and get answers on the spot.” “It was truly a blessing to see so many in our community take advantage of all the resources found at our senior expo,” Hamm added. “Our senior expo is a one-stop shop and makes it easy for our senior citizens to find resources available to them. At a time when so many people are struggling to make ends meet due to high grocery prices, utility bills, and prescription prices, our senior expo provides them with the information on programs and resources that are here to assist them.” Nearly 100 exhibitors shared current information on state programs and services for seniors, including health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, financial planning, and government services. North Central Sight Services provided complimentary document shredding, and the Lycoming County Sheriff’s Office offered a

Montgomery River Bridge to reopen to traffic
Montgomery, Pa. — PennDOT announced the Montgomery River Bridge, which carries Route 54 over the West Branch Susquehanna River, will open to traffic by midnight tonight. Drivers should anticipate minor traffic impacts as the contractor, J.D. Eckman, Inc., completes final construction activities associated with the rehabilitation project. On Tuesday, Sept. 22 and Wednesday, Sept. 23, drivers can expect single lane conditions with flagging between First Street in Montgomery and River Road in Muncy Creek Township, during daylight hours. The bridge, which was built in 1938, was closed in August while the contractor removed a portion of the bridge deck and applied a new concrete overlay. Additional work included curb repairs, replacement of joint seals, approach work, and line painting. Drivers should be alert, slow down, expect delays in travel, and drive with caution. J.D. Eckman, Inc. is the prime contractor for this $1.9 million bridge rehabilitation project. Work includes removal of a portion of the existing concrete deck overlay and replacement with a new concrete overlay, complete curb repairs, replacement of expansion joint seal materials to protect the ends of the existing steel beams from water and salt, minor bridge approach roadway work, and line painting. Recovery simulation, block party a success at Union County Resource Center
Lewisburg, Pa. — The Union County Resource Center was especially lively last week as the CMSU Recovery Simulation and subsequent Block Party kicked off, organized by Susquehanna Valley Mediation and Gaudenzia. To start the day on Sept. 18, staff from CMSU Behavioral Health and Developmental Services greeted participants at the door with a folder containing their assigned identity. In the building’s west end, the room was lined with tables labeled “Probation,” “Pawn Shop,” “Identification Services,” “Court & CYS,” and more. Each section represented a branch of the elaborate system that individuals in recovery must navigate. According to Case Management Supervisor Erica Barnes, even participants who experienced success often did so through “shady” means — a part of the simulation that is intentional, as it reflects how real people are left to navigate real systems. “The most important aspect is to put people in the shoes of individuals who are in recovery or are in current substance use,” Barnes said. “It shows how difficult it is for them to stay on the right path, make the right choices, and still try to meet all of the requirements of our social services agencies.” Many participants experienced simulated relapses, fines, hardships, and repercussions

No dollar amount is worth a lifetime of noise and risk, Gregg Township says | Opinion
Recently, PNK Group was featured in local newspapers and radio announcements after proposing a $4-million Community Benefit Agreement to Gregg Township, Allenwood. PNK is proposing a data center complex directly bordering a neighborhood. The offer of $4 million is insufficient compensation for the community to endure a lifetime of noise, air pollution, and potential water pollution. We’d simply like to enjoy our backyards and have no desire to go to a park next to a data center.
