South Sacramento house fire kills 2 00:37

SACRAMENTO – Officials say two people have died after a house fire in south Sacramento late Wednesday morning.

Sacramento Fire crews arrived at the scene just before 11 a.m. along Niantic Way, off 21st Street, and found a heavy fire at the back of the single-story home and smoke coming from the front.

Firefighters say one person was found dead inside the home. Another victim was pulled from the home, received CPR and was taken to the hospital. That person later died, Sacramento Fire officials said.

In the rear, firefighters said there were several cars, including one that caught fire. The wind exposed the fire to the vehicles and another home just behind them, but crews quickly got a hose line to the rear of the house and prevented it from spreading to the vehicles and the other home.

The Sacramento Police Department responded to the scene to take over the investigation into the death, while fire investigators will look into what sparked the fire – which is under investigation.

There were other tenants in the home at the time of the fire. They were able to make it out safely and are being questioned.

The home suffered extensive damage and is not livable.

Officials have not released the names of either person who died.
