(FOX40.COM) — Customers of Sacramento Municipal Utility District will soon see slightly higher electricity bills after a rate increase goes into effect.

Starting on May 1, SMUD will increase rates by 2.75%, according to an email message from the district sent to subscribers.

Parts of Interstate 80 to be closed for nearly one week. Here’s why

According to SMUD, the average residential customer will see an increase of $3.72 to their monthly bill.

The increase is one of four scheduled across 2024 and 2025 , all of which were approved by the district in the fall of 2023. Increases of 2.75% are also scheduled for January and May of 2025.

The four increases are meant to help with wildfire prevention and mitigation, infrastructure improvements, clean energy compliance and to pay for increased costs of materials and labor, SMUD said.

The utility district said certain low-income customers may qualify for the Energy Assistance Program Rate , which applies a discount to utility bills.
