Word of Purdue's incoming president draws a range of reactions

Students, alums and community leaders across campus share thoughts on and for Jay B. Silveria Boilermakers and community members have a rainbow of requests for Purdue’s new president, announced Nov. 5 . Top of mind? Tech investment, the tuition freeze and freedom of speech. All faculty and staff members the Journal & Courier spoke to were reluctant to comment on the record, citing lack of preparation or fear of consequences from the university. But Stephanie Masta, a professor in Purdue’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies, collected likes from both faculty and students under her critique of the board’s selection, which she posted on X and Linkedin . “Purdue University selects a non-academic president with little to no experience in academic research, who has no PhD, no connections to Indiana, and has only been at his current position for under 2 years. What a joke. “Selected boards make terrible choices. This is what happens when trustees want to work in the dark — the people with the most expertise are ignored.” The ability to share such opinions mattered to Malika Ansari, 22, who said the political environment is a concern for her: “I would want free speech to be prioritized.” Alejandro Morales

Frankfort High School Earns 2026 Indiana Purple Star School Designation

Frankfort High School has earned the 2026 Indiana Purple Star School designation, recognizing its commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun announced that more than 75 schools across the state earned or renewed the designation this year. The Indiana Department of Education, in collaboration with the Indiana National Guard, selected 35 new Purple Star Schools, while 41 schools renewed their designations. The recognition is valid for three years.

Sectional championship week of the IHSAA football postseason is here, and only one East Central Indiana team is left standing. Muncie Central (8-4) will host Class 4A No. 10 Logansport (12-0) for the Class 4A Sectional 20 championship. The Bearcats stunned Yorktown in a 28-27 instant classic last week to punch their ticket to a sectional championship game for the first time since 2006.
