The opening round of the 2026 NJSIAA public-school playoffs resulted in few surprises at the top of the New Jersey Super 25 rankings, with many of the state’s top teams rolling into the sectional semifinals. Washington Township extended its state-best winning streak to 24 games with a 56-14 victory over South Brunswick, while unbeaten Old Tappan, Rancocas Valley and Elizabeth all improved to 10-0 with convincing wins. South Jersey's first female state champ named RV's girls' head coach

Kaila Mungo set the standard for girls’ wrestling at Rancocas Valley Regional High School. Now, she’s going to lead the Red Devils. The first state champion in South Jersey girls’ wrestling history, Mungo was recently approved as the new girls’ head coach at her alma mater. “Kaila is a true trailblazer who holds a special place in our program’s history,” Rancocas Valley athletic director Mike Lamb said in a press release. “Her wrestling experience, fierce competitive spirt and passion will help our student-athletes grow both on and off the mat.” Mungo’s rise in the wrestling world may have been a surprise to some. She was a standout softball player for the Red Devils and went out for wrestling as a way to stay in shape for her work on the diamond. “When I first started wrestling, I knew absolutely nothing," Mungo said in a press release. "But I quickly developed a passion for it and became determined to learn as much as I could. I started obsessing over learning new positions, mastering different moves and finding ways to improve my skills." Mungo would be a diamond on the mat when she won the heavyweight title in the 2019 NJSIAA state

See new No. 1 in Bucks County big-school high school football rankings

Well, we'll keep trying. The last time we did the Bucks County area big-school football rankings two weeks ago, we trumpeted the fact that we had the same No. 1 team, Pennridge, in back-to-back rankings for the first time all season. Now, again, we don't. The Rams lost for the first time last week, 21-14, to surging Central Bucks South . So, does that put the Titans on top of our list? No? It's 9-1 Central Bucks West , who beat the Titans when they played, taking over as our top dog. (Whether the Bucks want this designation after we've had so many No. 1s come and go is another story). Regardless, we head to the postseason with a reshuffled rankings (for teams in Class 4A, 5A and 6A), but it kind of makes it fun (I guess). Our small-school rankings , for teams in Class 3A, 2A and A, will be out next week. Let's go: 1. Central Bucks West (9-1) Since losing to Pennridge 14-7 in the final seconds of their Week Four matchup, the Bucks have outscored their last six opponents (including CB South, CB East and North Penn), 233-68, or an average of 39-11 per game.

CR South takes win streak into District One football playoffs

HOLLAND — Council Rock South came into the 2026 high school football season with high hopes. A number of quality Golden Hawks players returned from last year’s Suburban One League Continental Conference championship team that went 10-2 and won a district playoff game, plus they added senior transfer quarterback Cannon Benzio, a Navy commit, to the roster. CR South finished 6-3 during the regular season by winning its first two games, losing three in a row and closing out the campaign with four straight victories heading into the PIAA District One Class 6A playoffs . The Hawks’ two conference losses were by one (Souderton, 14-13) and three (Quakertown, 24-21) points. The highlight was a 26-21 home victory against previously undefeated Plymouth Whitemarsh on Oct. 23 in which junior running back Jerry Rogers scored all four touchdowns. “The (regular) season was like a rollercoaster,” said CRS senior defensive end/fullback Chris Guinter. Had CR South not lost to Souderton and Quakertown after falling to Pennridge, head coach CJ Szydlik doesn’t believe his team would’ve completed the regular season with such a flourish. “If we don’t go through that at the beginning of the year, we don’t make this run and probably don’t
