Yakima city council votes to remove live-feed cameras
YAKIMA, Wash. — The Yakima City Council approved a resolution that starts a 60-day process to remove live-feed Flock cameras inside city limits. The vote was 5-2 (Councilmembers Byers and Glenn voting 'no') after months of discussion and a long council meeting. The new resolution does not fully ban the cameras for good but instead requires council approval before any more could be installed in the city.Yakima Police Chief Shawn Boyle says the vote moved away from a key public safety goal."The number one priority is safe and healthy Yakima. And what is going on with our Council at this point is not supporting the number one mission," Boyle said.People who supported the resolution raised privacy concerns during the meeting. One Yakima resident argued that the debate reflected a broader tradeoff."This concept of trading privacy for security is not new, and it's a concept that's been borne out of fear of your own neighbors," a Yakima resident said.People who opposed the resolution said the live-feed cameras could help lower crime. Another Yakima resident pointed to car thefts in the valley."When Flock came into town in the Yakima Valley, vehicle thefts were at an absolutely unprecedented rate. Those numbers went down dramatically,"
