Police say the shooting happened around 3:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15 near North Main St. and College Blvd. They say they were pursuing 33-year-old Fasutino Carette Jr., who fled on foot following a vehicle chase.

RPD says NMSP started a traffic stop after Carette weaved in and out of lanes across the highway heading south on U.S. 285. He fled the traffic stop and reached speeds more than 100 miles per hour heading into Roswell. Carette abandoned the vehicle after RPD used stop sticks.

Carette was found hiding in a pile of tires behind a shop and police say he refused to come out. They say he then shot at an officer hitting them in the lower leg. The officer, along with two other RPD officers, fired back. Carette was found with multiple gunshot wounds and died on scene. The injured officer was taken to the hospital and is recovering. No one else was injured.
