Springfield's annual Route 66 festival reveals lineup, replaces parade
With Route 66 turning 100 years old this year, Springfield is focused on celebrating the Mother Road throughout the year. While the Queen City will host the national centennial kickoff celebration at the end of April, it will still hold its annual Birthplace of Route 66 Festival in August. Organizers of the annual festival announced this year's entertainment, new additions and changes on Wednesday, March 4. The festival will take place Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8. While typically the festival includes a parade of classic cars, this year the parade will be replaced by open cruises on both nights to minimize road closures. The cruises will begin at 6 p.m. both nights and go west on St. Louis Street and loop around on Trafficway. Registration is not required. Classic cars will still be on display in downtown Springfield for the entirety of the festival. For the first time, custom car designer and TV personality Dave Kindig of Kindig-It Design will join the festival with Kevin "KevDogg" Schiele and the Kindig-It Big Rig on both days. Kindig-It Design, from the TV show "Bitchin' Rides," will also display three custom-built vehicles and the Rig will include a full merchandise setup.
