Rome announces road closures prior to officer Michael Jensen's wake, funeral

Rome has announced road closures for the scheduled calling hours and funeral service for the late Syracuse police officer Michael Jensen.

Calling hours are Friday night, while the funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning.

Jensen was one of two law enforcement officers who were fatally shot in Syracuse on Sunday evening while looking for a driver who fled a traffic stop. The suspect was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.

The shootout took place shortly after 8 p.m. in the residential neighborhood of Liverpool, claiming the lives of Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Michael Hoosock as well as Jensen, authorities said.

Friday road closures

Beginning at 1 p.m. and lasting until approximately 10 p.m., the following road closures will be in effect:

• Turin Road: Closed from Cypress Street to West Oak Street.
• West Chestnut Street: Closed from Turin Road to Carroll Street.
• Roser Terrace: Closed from Cypress Street to West Cedar Street.
• Anken Street: Closed from West Cedar Street to West Chestnut Street.
• Craig Street: Closed from West Cedar Street to West Chestnut Street.
• Merrick Road: Entire road will be closed.

Limited access will be granted to local traffic only. Residents in the vicinity are kindly urged to minimize travel during this period.

The city apologizes for any inconvenience caused by these temporary restrictions.

Saturday road closings

Beginning at 7 a.m. and lasting until approximately 2 p.m., the following road closures will be in effect:

E. Dominick St: Closed from Mill St. to Black River Blvd.

Mill Street: Entire street from E. Dominick St. to Martin St.

Railroad Street: Closed from E. Dominick St. to Bouck St.

Bouck St.: Erie Blvd. E. to Black River Blvd., including Ace Pl.

River St. Southbound traffic onto E. Dominick St. will be redirected Northbound. to St. Peter's Ave.

Black River Blvd at Erie Blvd. E. to W Court St.

• Harbor Way: Mill St. to E. Dominick St.

Local traffic only will be allowed on E. Dominick St - 6th St. to Mill St.

Officials said the closures are essential to facilitate the dignified proceedings honoring Officer Jensen's service and sacrifice.

Residents are asked to avoid these areas and to observe any traffic signs or traffic control officers.
