RPD details Lilac Festival security measures

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Police Department is staging extra patrols across Lilac Festival grounds and on the perimeter of Highland Park over the next ten days.

Captain Greg Bello with RPD says officers are prepared to direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic over the course of the event. He also discussed how the department plans to handle crowd control, with issues escalating there in years past.

“We run into these issues with the youths coming down and causing problems at different festivals and events — so we’ve been working with different organizations to try to stem that and we anticipate things going very smoothly these next couple weeks for the festival.”

The Lilac Festival runs May 10 through May 19. Anyone who comes across any incident during the festival is encouraged to call 911.
