ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With the warmer weather finally arriving in Rochester, many people are starting to take advantage of being outside any chance they get. For some, this means grabbing their bicycle out of the garage and strapping on their helmets. However, before heading out on the roads, there may be a few things you want to do first. Scott Page, who is the owner of Full Moon Vista, explains that getting your bike tuned up should be first on your to do list.

“Just to come in and make sure your tires are correct, your shifting correct, your bike’s going to work and it’s hard when it’s been sitting in the garage all winter long,” Page says.

After making sure your bike is all set to go, you also want to make sure you are staying safe while riding. Wearing a helmet and bright clothes are two important things to remember. If you plan on riding at night, it may be a good idea to invest in lights.

“You know, front light and especially a rear blinking light. They make these lights really bright, really amazing now. Most of them are USB chargeable, so it’s not an inconvenience. They’re lightweight, they’re small and it really lets you be seen out there,” said Page.

You also want to make sure you are obeying the rules of the roads as a cyclist.

“You don’t want to go the wrong way on the road. We see people a lot of times where they’re coming at traffic. You don’t want to be on the sidewalk. You actually want to be on the road going the direction the automobiles do,” Page says.

During this month, it’s not only cyclists who are reminded of the laws on the road. Motorists are also encouraged to review the laws when passing cyclists.

“Just be patient. If you can’t get by them, just relax for a moment, wait til there’s a good section where you can get by and do it safely,” Page says.
