Pocatello Thunder blank rival Century 13-0 on senior night
POCATELLO − The Pocatello Thunder came into senior night with nothing to lose and a city rivalry score to settle. They settled it, beating the Century Diamondbacks 13-0 Friday at Lookout Field to finish the season with back-to-back wins. Both teams finished 3-6. “I couldn’t be more proud of our guys,” head coach Dave Spillett said. “They did a great job all week preparing for this one. They’ve been wanting this one for a little bit, and they came out and took it, and they did it together in all three phases. I’m really proud of this football family right now.” For the seniors, it was their last game on Lookout Field, and they wanted to go out on top. The Thunder got the ball first, and a long run by junior quarterback Rhev Stucki set Pocatello up inside the 5-yard line. From there, the elements and strong defense on both sides brought the game to a standstill, and Pocatello went into the locker room clinging to the 7-0 advantage. The offense,

Local students dig into spud harvest
By the time most Idaho students settle into their school day, high school sophomore Graeme Carlson has been at work — sorting potatoes or running a rake for a local farmer. For the last two weeks, anyway. Carlson’s Snake River School District is one of several in eastern Idaho where the school bell takes a back seat to harvest season. Students in these districts, including Firth and Sugar Salem, enjoy a two-week break from school. When the spuds are ripe, the calendar makes room. For many, it’s a vacation. But for students like Carlson and his sister, Olivia, a high school junior, it means spud trucks, long shifts and a crash course in rural Idaho work life. During harvest, the Carlson kids are out of school but up early — 4 a.m. for Olivia, who attends a chilly cross-country practice before pulling on her work clothes and heading to the fields. Olivia and Graeme last week joined other students who worked along a conveyor belt sorting an endless, bouncing stream of potatoes. The work moves quickly. Trucks haul loads of spuds from surrounding fields. Machinery rumbles. The potatoes are stored into cellars, then make their way to grocery stores, restaurants
