Mlynkova brings Walter Cup to Burlington
BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Back in May, the Montreal Victoire captured their first ever PWHL Walter Cup championship. On Monday, one former Catamount from that team brought the hardware back to Burlington. 2024 UVM grad Natalie Mlynkova was back in town to show off the cup, talk to fans, and sign some autographs as well. It’s just the latest trophy in a long journey for Mlynkova, a career that already includes a World Championship bronze medal with Czechia and a Cammi Granato Award as Hockey East Player of the Year as a senior. Mlynkova says she was thrilled to give back to the UVM community that gave her so much. “Obviously, it’s a huge accomplishment,” Mlynkova said of the title. “A lot of people behind it that supported me and helped me to develop, especially here at UVM. I’m really grateful for having that opportunity and just having the community behind me.” “I think days like this, when I see the community come out and rally to support her, makes me feel like I shouldn’t take for granted that I can pick up my phone and text her anytime,” added UVM head coach Jim Plumer. “Our players are super proud of her. She has practiced with us a number of times last year and this year. And so I think for us to see her want to bring the Cup back and celebrate with the Burlington community and the UVM community is really special.” This is the last time we’ll see Nat in a Victoire sweater, at least for a while as she was selected by San Jose in this Summer’s PWHL Expansion Draft. Now that normally might be a scary proposition to move across the continent to a brand new city...but she’s been able to lean on former UVM teammate and San Jose native Evelyne Blais Savoie. “I contacted (Blais Savoie) right away when I found out,” Mlynkova said. “It’s actually amazing that someone that I got to play with for years is based in San Jose and has family there and everything. So I did hit her up for some recommendations, where to live and things like that. And she’s coming to the training camp with us, so I’m hoping that we get to spend more time together.”
