Beyond Buc-ee's: Restaurants with Texas ties keep heading to NC

North Carolina is getting a taste of the Lone Star State. Texas-based Buc-ee’s, already building one store in the state, is now eyeing a second location along Interstate 95. The travel center could join Texas-inspired restaurants setting up shop in the Raleigh area. From a barbecue joint to a beloved burger chain, here are openings The News & Observer has covered this year: Buc-ee’s could build a second North Carolina travel center near I-95 and Halifax Road in Rocky Mount. Its first NC location is already under construction off I-85/40 in Alamance County, and there’s no official opening date. East of Texas , a Texas-style barbecue restaurant from owner Claire Calvin, opened at Durham’s American Tobacco Campus . The restaurant serves brisket, burnt ends, pork belly and housemade sausage. It’s an expansion of a Winston-Salem spot that opened in 2023. Shipley Donuts , founded in Houston in 1936, plans to open two Raleigh shops over the next two years, with the first expected in 2027. The chain is known for handcrafted doughnuts and savory kolaches stuffed with fillings like sausage and jalapeños. Native Fine Diner's Michelin designation puts Greenville on the food map

The recent Michelin Dining Guide recommendation has Native Fine Diner and its owner, Luke Owens, paying even closer attention to details. Owens was in Nashville, Tennessee, last week to be recognized for his restaurant’s prestigious recommended status in the Michelin Guide American South, one of only 58 listings from North Carolina. The honor came after a year of surreptitious visits from anonymous inspectors who graded the restaurant based on a host of characteristics, including the quality of the ingredients, the mastery of flavor and cooking techniques, the ability to see the chef’s personality come through the food and the value of the meal. It marks the first time a Greenville restaurant has been named to the Michelin Guide, which was originally developed by the tire company as a way to give people guidance on where to travel and where to eat when they travel. The designation goes a long way toward establishing the city as a place with good dining experiences and it opens up the possibility that more Greenville-area restaurants may be included in future editions of the annual guide, Owens said. Melissa Gay said business at her café in the northwestern part of the city has been great, with consistent customers coming in and with new customers coming in from all over. Gay said Wednesday afternoon that, in fact, someone was going to be coming in from Virginia the next day after seeing her postings on social media. Gay has The Well Fed Cheetah, which offers boxed lunches and offers sandwiches, candied jalapeno pimento cheese, chicken bacon ranch dips, pasta salads and desserts. The Well Fed Cheetah began serving customers July 13 and had an official opening ceremony Wednesday afternoon. The business is off Benvenue Road between Independence Drive and North Wesleyan Boulevard and inside the same location as the Remedy This ... Naturally! health foods store. Gay said the reason for the flood of customers is because she offers exotic choices of sandwiches and posts images of them on social media. The Well Fed Cheetah has 71,000 followers on Facebook.
