KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo Public Schools is reconsidering the use of a controversial reading program in the district. Reading Recovery, a literacy intervention program for first graders at low reading levels, has been discredited by some for only providing short-term gains, but hindering long-term growth. The program teaches students to memorize words and use context, pictures and other clues to identify words, instead of sounding them out, per NPR.
