Monday's results: Revere softball wins district game, Ellet softball wins City Series with no-hitter
MONDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS
SOFTBALL
Revere is authoring a form of May Madness as an underdog team winning games in the OHSAA Division I tournament.
No. 22-seeded Revere defeated No. 13 Magnificat 7-6 Monday in a Division I, Northeast 6 district semifinal at North Ridgeville. Revere (10-13) used a four-run top of the sixth inning to erase a 5-3 deficit.
Sydney Kreighbaum hit three singles and scored a run. Gayle Mishic had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI and Bella Soful totaled two hits and two RBIs to power Revere into a district final at 5 p.m. Wednesday against North Ridgeville.
Revere’s other offensive standouts were Alexa Kelley (double, walk, RBI, two runs); Paige Kelley (single, run); Izzy Novosielski (double, two RBIs, run); Beckie Gayner (single, run) and Ashley Gardner (walk, run).
Revere’s Tess Hodgen recorded the win for the second tournament game in a row in relief of Gardner.
Revere’s victory over Magnificat (15-9) came after defeating No. 5 seed Berea-Midpark 13-11 last Wednesday. Revere scored nine runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 9-4 deficit in that one.
“This group of athletes is one of the most resilient I have coached," Revere coach Alexandra Krakowiak said. "They have so much heart and desire to win and succeed. They have each others back, pick each other up, and never give up on their teammates. It’s a special group and we are grateful for another game together.”
Ellet 10, Firestone 0
Rylie Sprouse pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Grace Norman hit two doubles, had four RBIs and scored a run to lead Ellet (16-10) past Firestone (10-11) in the City Series postseason championship at Firestone Stadium.
Sicillia Albaugh contributed a single, a triple, an RBI and a run with her mother, Sara Albaugh, finishing her first season as Ellet’s coach. Ellet defeated Firestone three times this season.
Ellet’s Kearns sisters were once again disruptive as Emily Kearns totaled a single, double and two runs and Riley Kearns added a single, RBI and run.
Ellet’s other notable players were Avery Simmons (three runs, walk, RBI), Keyli Myers (single, double, two RBIs), Carmen Allen (single, run) and Addy Lipply (single, run).
"Our top three hitters, Grace Norman, Emily Kearns and Sicillia Albaugh, continue to deliver clutch hits as they have done all season long for us," Sara Albaugh said. "Their consistency defensively and offensively, spirit and drive help bring our team to life. Rylie Sprouse delivered another strong performance on the mound, striking out 10 batters. Working a no-hitter against Firestone is no easy task. Once again, this truly was a team effort, and I am so proud of everyone stepping up to do their part. It was rewarding to send off our senior Emily Kearns with this last win."
Ellet softball is a family affair for the Albaughs as Sara's husband and Sicillia's father, Brad, is an assistant coach.
"We have been coaching her for a long time in various sports," Sara Albaugh said. "I have been coaching her in volleyball, Brad coached her in basketball and we both coached her in softball growing up. She is used to us, the way we coach and our expectations as coaches. ... She comes in clutch for us. She had two walk-offs for us. A walk-off versus Springfield and a walk-off versus Jackson to give us two wins. She has been doing a great job and it is amazing to see her grow. I can't believe she is already a junior."
Sicillia Albaugh delivered a two-run double to top Springfield 4-3 on April 26 and a two-run double to 10-run rule Jackson 14-4 in the second game of a double-header on April 27. Both games were at Davenport Park.
