SouthCoast students can apply for $900k in aid

Students across southeastern Massachusetts can apply for more than 65 SouthCoast Community Foundation scholarships totaling more than $900,000, with applications due Jan. 11, 2027. The scholarships are available to students pursuing higher education, vocational and technical education, certificate programs and workforce training, according to a community announcement. Graduating high school seniors, students in technical certificate or trade school programs and current college students can explore the scholarships, with eligibility requirements varying by award. The foundation awarded more than $900,000 in scholarships to more than 120 students in 2026, according to the announcement. The program places particular attention on first- and second-generation college students and students already enrolled in college. Who can apply for SouthCoast Community Foundation scholarships SouthCoast Community Foundation serves 41 cities and towns across southeastern Massachusetts. Communities include Attleboro, Bridgewater, Brockton, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, New Bedford, Plymouth, Somerset, Swansea, Taunton, Wareham and Westport. Students and families can review individual scholarship descriptions and eligibility requirements at southcoastcf.org/2027scholarships . Most scholarships use the foundation's Universal Application, which matches applicants with scholarships for which they may be eligible. Some scholarships require separate applications. The foundation has also revised its application this year to tailor questions to different types of applicants.

Wareham students turn school into Halloween haunt

Wareham High School welcomed more than 300 children and family members for the seventh annual Haunted Hallways event Oct. 27. About 50 high school students took part in the Halloween event, according to a community announcement. Student Council members organized Haunted Hallways with help from National Honor Society members, school clubs, teachers and other volunteers. Students, clubs and teachers decorated stations throughout the school and handed out candy to trick-or-treaters. National Honor Society students also offered a spooky craft-making session in the cafeteria. Representatives from Cranberry Credit Union staffed a table and distributed coloring books and candy. Students turn school halls into Halloween attraction Teachers and students decorated classroom doorways in the days before Haunted Hallways, creating themes featuring monsters, festive movies and more. “The kids get very excited about doing this,” Student Council Advisor Carolyn Gomes Vieira said. “They love giving back, and they love looking at all the costumes and seeing the little kids. One parent commented that her child gets to see the ‘big kids school,’ and hopefully that interaction with students and staff from the high school makes it easier for the child when they transfer into it in a few years.” Vieira said some of
