Where to hear live jazz in Kansas City, from 18th & Vine to Waldo

For nearly three decades, Kansas City native Chalis O’Neal has been playing trumpet, performing at jazz venues throughout the metro and contributing to the city’s longstanding musical tradition. From Vine Street Brewing Co. in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District to Stock Hill and Lonnie’s Reno Club, O’Neal has performed at establishments offering audiences different ways to experience Kansas City’s jazz scene. He also recommends the Blue Room and Ted’s Taproom, which he describes as a newer destination for live jazz, food and drinks. Although Kansas City has a number of established jazz clubs, O’Neal says the music extends well beyond traditional performance venues, with restaurants, breweries and neighborhood bars regularly featuring local musicians. “Kansas City has a great jazz scene,” O’Neal said. “I believe I heard there’s over 50 venues around town, not necessarily jazz clubs, but 50 venues that offer jazz.” Vine Street Brewing Co. On Wednesday evenings, the upstairs taproom at Vine Street Brewing Co. becomes a gathering place for some of Kansas City’s jazz musicians, who come together to improvise, exchange ideas and create music in real time. The weekly jam session, known as “Office Hours,” is led by Kansas City trombonist Marcus Lewis and

Johnson County café closes ‘with a heavy heart' after a year in business

After a year and a few months in business, a Johnson County international café has closed. Taiwanese-based chain 85°C Bakery Cafe , which has locations across the world, closed its Overland Park location on Halloween. The former bakery and coffee shop had signs on its door Monday morning that alerted fans to its exit. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery …” the notice read in part. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for your loyalty, trust, and support over the years.” The lights were off and product had been moved out of the store. In June 2025, the location opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave., serving individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. The opening day was received with long lines and excitement from fans who had been to 85°C’s locations in Hawaii, Texas and beyond. Around that same time, international chain Paris Baguette opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall. That chain, based in South Korea, now also has locations at 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 1360

Firm ‘boundaries' and security upgrades: What's next for Adam Hamilton's church?

After reflecting on daylight saving time, All Saints’ Day and a church coat drive, the Rev. Adam Hamilton turned in his Oct. 30 weekly newsletter to the fact that he was about to stand for election to the U.S. Senate. “I’ve been able to pursue a path that I felt personally and spiritually compelled to pursue, and I’ve been able to share about my faith and our church’s ministry across Kansas and around our nation,” Hamilton wrote in the message to his congregation. The day after Hamilton defeated incumbent Roger Marshall to become the first Kansas Democrat elected to the Senate since the Great Depression, Church of the Resurrection published a post-election FAQ explaining what will and won’t change between the senior pastor and the more than 24,000 active members of the church he founded in 1990. “While congregants may hold differing opinions about the political outcome, we know that Adam will lead with integrity and wisdom in the Senate chambers,” the church release said. It notes that Hamilton will stay on as senior pastor but that his employment status will “shift from full-time to quarter-time.” Hamilton is expected to preach an estimated 12 to 18 weekends per year, including
