A 35-year-old mother in Georgia was killed just days before Mother’s Day after she was allegedly mauled to death by several dogs near her home. Courtney Williams, whose two children were also attacked by the animals, was found dead on Thursday afternoon, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, deputies with the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office at about 4:45 p.m. on May 9 responded to a complaint regarding “multiple minors being attacked by a dog” outside of an address in the 2000 block of Webster Road in Quitman, Georgia. Quitman is located about 230 miles south of Atlanta.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they “encountered several aggressive dogs on the property.”

“It was determined that an individual had already taken several minors to a local hospital,” the GBI release states. “Deputies subsequently located Williams’ body in the yard of the home.”

The agency said that an autopsy will be performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of Williams’ death.

According to a report from Albany, Georgia, NBC and ABC affiliate WALB, the fatal attack took place at a bus stop located just behind Brooks County Middle School.

It was not immediately clear if the dogs were strays or if they belonged to someone, but a local resident told the station that multiple complaints had been filed over the county’s lack of an animal control department.

“People dump dogs all over the county and no one can get help with them because there’s no county animal control,” the resident reportedly said. “This is so sad.”

In a Facebook post from Crystal Cox, who identified herself as Williams’ sister-in-law, Cox wrote that it was the neighbor’s dogs who attacked Williams and her children. Cox said that Williams’ son “didn’t get away fast enough as he pushed his sister out of harm’s way” and ended up being “hurt pretty bad” in the attack.

Cox said that her nephew received several staples to close up his wounds was but “doing good” and resting at her home following the traumatic experience.

Authorities have emphasized that the investigation into Williams’ death remains ongoing. The GBI is urging anyone with information relevant to the attack to contact the agency’s Investigative Office at 229-225-4090. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via phone at 1-800-597-8477.
