Henrico Sports and Events Center partners with Virginia attorney general to educate public about fentanyl poisoning
The Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority is partnering with Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares to launch a public service campaign to educate people about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning. The campaign will involve prominent signage, digital displays, and information booths at various events, enabling the ongoing “One Pill Can Kill” initiative to reach attendees and also provide information about identifying and avoiding counterfeit medications.
Henrico Schools to host ‘Drive the Bus’ event May 4
Henrico Schools will host its “Drive the Bus” career event Saturday, May 4 at Glen Allen High school for applicants who are considering becoming school bus drivers. In addition to getting to test-drive a school bus, participants will be able to learn more about the responsibilities of bus drivers and how they are paid. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to all applicants over the age of 21. Candidates for full-time and substitute driver positions must have a valid Virginia driver’s license and be able to obtain a CDL Class B instructional permit or hold a CDL Class B license with endorsements in P/S (Passenger Transportation/School Bus) and airbrakes. Applicants also will be required to pass a physical and drug test.
VDOE debuts new Spring SOL Parent Report
The Virginia Department of Education has developed a new Spring Standards of Learning Parent Report that aims to provide parents with details about their children’s performance in a clear format. The reports are available to parents whose students have already completed the spring SOL assessments and can be obtained directly from their child’s school.
Fantasy/sci-fi podcast co-hosted by Henrico woman nominated for Hugo Award
For the fourth year in a row, the Worldbuilding for Masochists podcast – co-hosted by Henrico citizen Cass Morris – has been nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Fancast. The Hugos recognize excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy and are awarded by the World Science Fiction Society at each year’s WorldCon. The Hugo Award ceremony will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, this August during WorldCon.
Henrico author releases latest fantasy book
Henrico author E.G. Kardos has released his latest fantasy book, The Elixir: Journey On – the third in his Elias Chronicles series. The book follows the main character, 16-year-old Elias, as he embarks on a perilous journey to the Isle of Eahta in search of the Elixir of Life.
May 1 is Virginia’s income tax-filing deadline
The filing deadline for Virginia taxpayers to file their individual income taxes is less than a week away. Wednesday, May 1 is the last day to submit a return and pay the taxes owed. Virginia Tax officials are encouraging people to file their taxes electronically and set up direct deposit to receive any refunds, which will expedite the process. There also is an automatic six-month filing extension available for those who miss the deadline. However, interest and penalties can accumulate if the tax is not paid in full by the deadline.

World Fish Migration Day is a celebration of the natural world and the importance of biodiversity. The local event, hosted by the James River Association, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, Virginia Outdoors and other local partners, will be held on May 4 at Ancarrow’s Landing in Richmond, near Rocketts Landing. The 17th annual RavenCon Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention will take place at Virginia Crossings in Glen Allen April 26-28. The event will feature a range of activities for fans of all ages, including autograph signings, panels, workshops, readings, and concerts. Two well-known science fiction and fantasy writers and curators will be in attendance: Ursula Vernon, also known as T. Kingfisher, who has written more than 15 books for children, more than a dozen novels, and the webcomic Digger; and Ellen Datlow, who edits sci-fi and fantasy short fiction for Reactor.com and Nightfire Books and has won numerous awards for her work. Count Gore De Vol, also known as Dick Dyszel, will attend the event as well. Tickets good for the entire weekend are $55 at the door. Officials celebrate groundbreaking for northern segment of Fall Line Trail
Earlier this week, officials from Hanover, Henrico, and the Town of Ashland held a groundbreaking ceremony in Ashland to celebrate the start of construction on a 4.8-mile portion of the 43-mile Fall Line Trail. The section, currently called Design-Build Phase 1, will extend the northernmost existing completed section of the Ashland section of the trail to Woodman Road in Henrico. It is the first major construction phase of the Fall Line to be administered by Virginia Department of Transportation.
