Brewing legacy. Blockhouse Coffee honors family, history and community
ZANESVILLE – The aroma of blueberry filling and pecan pies quickly lifted through the air of the newly opened Blockhouse Coffee Company on State Street. Flour was spread across a table. A bowl of dough and a rolling pin sat at the ready. Containers of strawberries and black raspberries rested on the counter. Four sisters toiled away in the coffee shop's back kitchen. Emmy Clayton decorated berry tarts, while Lynn Burke worked on mini pies across the room. Linda Cromwell and Becky Mayle handled cinnamon rolls. The four are the daughters of Lizzie Norman, a renowned pie baker from Zanesville, they said, and are collectively known as Lizzie's Girls. They're trying to keep their mother's legacy alive, and, in doing so, they're also the masterminds behind Blockhouse's homemade desserts. The sisters have been responsible for some of its most popular items, noted co-owner Melissa Cromwell, also Linda's daughter-in-law, which include coconut cream and blueberry pies. "It has been fun for them. They're retired, so it gives them something to do. You can see they feel good about it when people come in and buy their pastries and enjoy. We wanted to be able to bring that piece into it for

Fred's Market marks 50 years of its iconic ham salad and more
LANCASTER − The United States may be celebrating its 250th birthday this year, but a local business also has a milestone birthday. Fred's Market , with its iconic ham salad at 700 Reese Ave., is celebrating its 50th anniversary of family ownership this year after Fred and Kathy Harley bought it in 1976. The business actually dates back to 1941 when Edwin and Frances Lane opened as an IGA store. That was also the birth of the ham salad, as co-owner David Drumm still uses that same recipe today. Drumm is also the store's butcher and started his career by helping out at the store while a teenager. He owns the business with his mother, Kathy Harley. "It doesn't even seem like that long really," Drumm said of the 50th anniversary. "I've been here for 48 years." He said the business has lasted so long because of the staple items it sells. "The ham salad, the pimento cheese and those kind things," Drumm said. "We were always famous for our ground chuck. But right now, meats aren't even selling that much because of the high prices. It's dangerous. You can lose more than you're making sometimes. But we have to

Historic tavern in Nelsonville to reopen
NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Six months after a devastating structural failure, The Mine Tavern is getting ready to open its doors. If all goes according to plan, The Mine Tavern will hold a “soft” reopening on Independence Day, followed by a full reopening on July 11, Patrick Norway, the manager of The Mine Tavern, explained. During the period between Independence Day and July 11, The Mine Tavern will have limited hours and a limited menu as restaurant staff work to familiarize themselves with the newly-renovated building. Located in Nelsonville’s Historic Public Square, The Mine Tavern is the second-oldest operational tavern in Ohio, having been in operation since 1842. The Mine Tavern was purchased by Patrick Norway and his parents from owner Joseph Koker three years prior, being the eighth family to own the tavern since it opened in the 19th century. However, the Norways were very nearly the last family to operate the tavern, after a six foot section of the brick wall extending from the ground to the roof collapsed on Feb. 15, as previously reported by The Messenger. Initially, it was believed that the condition of The Mine Tavern after the collapse was so poor that the structure would
