A 30-year-old Calvert County man is behind bars after he allegedly threatened four people with a knife during an early morning incident at at Prince Frederick residence on Armory Road.

According to court records, the defendant, identified as Christopher Jarret De Sousa, has been charged with four counts each of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, plus three counts of second-degree assault.

Court records have conflicting information regarding the defendant’s home town, as De Sousa has been identified as residing in Chesapeake Beach and Prince Frederick.

According to charging papers filed by Deputy Ian Tunnell of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened March 22 shortly before 1 a.m.

Tunnell and other deputies responded to a call about a man armed with a knife attacking other residents, who were barricaded in one of the bedrooms. Court papers state deputies knocked on the door of the home, identified themselves and heard a voice say the sheriff’s office was not allowed in the house.

One of De Sousa’s accusers told Tunnell that the defendant “had tried to stab them and while they were hiding in the bedroom had stabbed the door repeatedly, attempted to gain entry and made death threats,” court papers stated.

Another of De Sousa’s accusers said the defendant became angry when the four occupants refused to drive him to the liquor store.

Less than an hour after deputies arrived, De Sousa surrendered to them without incident.

Invoking his Miranda rights, De Sousa declined to speak with deputies.

Tunnell said in court documents that six knives were found in the house.

While several deputies reportedly pointed their guns at De Sousa, “no force was used,” Tunnell said.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

In a district court hearing on Monday, Judge Robert Riddle ordered De Sousa be held without bond. Another hearing on the charges De Sousa is facing is scheduled for April 16 in district court.
