Dangerous New Castle Metro-North crossing to get new $107M overpass

A dangerous Metro-North Railroad crossing along the Saw Mill River Parkway in New Castle will be replaced with a $107 million overpass. The Roaring Brook Road crossing is among 91 projects across 37 states that will split $1.24 billion in funding earmarked for rail crossing safety upgrades, the Federal Railroad Administration announced Friday, Oct. 30. It’s the largest of the grants, surpassing the $90 million California received to eliminate a crossing in Burlingame. The New York State Department of Transportation will pick up 20% of the cost to design and build the overpass. The Harlem Line crossing has been the scene of dozens of accidents. Some 9,000 vehicles and over 100 passenger trains pass through every day. What to know about Roaring Brook Road crossing funds “Protecting the traveling public and enhancing the backbone of our nation’s transportation system — our rail network — is all part of the Trump administration's commitment to move people and products better than ever,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. New York’s U.S. senators, Democrats Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, have advocated for the changes. TRAVEL ADVISORY: Weekend Closures on the Westbound Long Island Expressway and the Southbound Meadowbrook State Parkway in Nassau County

The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists of the following upcoming full closures to facilitate two projects in Nassau County:. Westbound Long Island Expressway will be closed between Exit 43A (Robbins Lane) and Exit 42 (Northern State Parkway) in the Town of Oyster Bay beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, November 6, until 5 a.m. on Monday, November 9, to facilitate bridge deck maintenance. Robbins Lane will also be closed in both directions between the North Service Road and South Service Road. Motorists will be detoured onto the North Service Road for approximately two miles to access the LIE. Passenger vehicles are advised to use the westbound Northern State Parkway as an alternative route. Commercial traffic is advised to use Exit 44N for the northbound Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (State Route 135) to Exit 14W towards westbound Jericho Turnpike (State Route 25) for approximately four miles for access to the westbound LIE.
