Why this former Red Raider could be the X-factor for TCU men's basketball

Much of the excitement surrounding TCU men’s basketball revolves around the return of its four veterans: Xavier Edmonds, Brock Harding, Micah Robinson and Tanner Toolson. The “core four” from last year’s NCAA Tournament run that also featured the program’s best record in Big 12 play gives TCU a chance to make its fifth tournament appearance in the past six years. But the key for the program to reach the second weekend of the tournament might be Texas Tech transfer center Luke Bamgboye. The 6-foot-10 junior will be the X-factor for the Horned Frogs and gives them much-needed size at the center spot after TCU had to play undersized last season with Edmonds (6-8) and forward David Punch (6-7), who transferred to Texas this offseason. The development and usage of Edmonds and Punch were a big reason why Bamgboye opted to transfer to Fort Worth after his lone season in Lubbock. “I loved the play style, the coaches and what [TCU head coach Jamie Dixon] has done with forwards and big men in the past,” Bamgboye said. “For example Xavier and Punch that left, they really developed those bigs, so I loved it.” Originally from London, Bamgboye started his collegiate career

UIL punishes Slaton ISD, athletic director for second violation in a year

UIL State Executive Committee chairman James Colbert was not happy to see Slaton ISD again after a hearing last December , and he let district officials know it Monday. The SEC placed SISD on two years probation and required the district to submit documentation on changes to its eligibility processes. Slaton athletic director/football coach Clint Conkin, who was on probation for a UIL violation, received a public reprimand and will serve probation for two years. Monday's ruling centered around an ineligible cross-country runner who participated in three meets this season, according to testimony in the public meeting. Slaton self-reported the violation, but because of SISD's issues with athletes' eligibility last year, the decision was made to punish the district and AD. Conkin received two years probation in December 2025 for providing false information on his daughter's Previous Athletics Participation Form when she transferred to Slaton from Clarendon. "I've been on this committee for probably 15 years, and we rarely get people back before their probation's done," Colbert said. "You're back less than a year after you were put on probation, so that's a problem." Slaton cross country coach Landon Sims took responsibility for the oversight of allowing the ineligible runner

Despite '25-26 season, Texas Tech women's basketball an underdog again

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As it turns out, prior success doesn't always result in elevated perception. The Texas Tech women's basketball team put together a much-awaited turnaround last season to end a 12-season NCAA Tournament drought. The Lady Raiders' first-round victory over Villanova was the program's first in March Madness since 2005. Tech finished 26-8, its best mark since the 2002-03 campaign that ended in the Elite Eight. Enough reason to believe the Lady Raiders are set to continue their upward trajectory, right? Well, not in the eyes of Big 12 coaches. Tech came in 10th in the conference's preseason coaches poll released early October. The Lady Raiders were picked 14th a year earlier before finishing in a fourth-place tie. The team hopes to replicate its surprising run, again using the projection as motivation. "It definitely adds fuel to the fire," Tech coach Krista Gerlich told the Avalanche-Journal at Big 12 media day. "We definitely use it to talk about respect and talk about people underestimating us.
