PLAINFIELD, NJ — At Monday night's Plainfield City Council meeting, a controversial ordinance was pulled from the agenda before the council was able to vote on it on second reading.

Passage of the ordinance on second reading would have changed bar closing time from 1am to 2am from Monday through Thursdays and from 2am to 4am on Saturdays. On Fridays and Sundays, bars would be required to close by 3am.

The controversial matter caused a stir on social media, leading to a petition that garnered 193 signatures in the days leading to the meeting.

"I'd like to indefinitely table MC-2024-22," said City of Plainfield Business Administrator Abby Levenson. The motion to table passed by a 7-0 vote, after which a portion of the crowd erupted into applause. City of Plainfield corporation council David Minchello called for order in the room.
