The City of Pittsburgh is set to expand its ShotSpotter gunfire detection system.

While some major cities are considering whether to abandon the controversial technology, in Pittsburgh, city officials are expanding the technology’s use to Carrick.

Council voted Tuesday to approve expanding the program.

The city initially implemented the ShotSpotter in three square miles between East Hills and Garfield in 2015.

In 2018, it was expanded to all six police zones. critics argue that a lack of transparency about the system should be reason enough for officials to ask more questions before making use of it.

The move is expected to cost $133,000 per year.
