Pocatello to unveil honorary street sign for Idaho’s first Latino district judge
POCATELLO — The city of Pocatello will unveil an honorary street sign Oct. 19 recognizing retired Idaho Judge Sergio Gutierrez, who made history as the state’s first Latino district court judge. The ceremony is scheduled for noon at South Eighth Avenue and Red Hill Road, across from the Pond Student Union Building at Idaho State University. Gutierrez is expected to attend, and the public is invited. The City Council approved the honorary renaming of South Eighth Avenue between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Humboldt Street as Gutierrez Avenue. The designation replaces the previous honorary name, Cesar Chavez Avenue. The honorary designation is symbolic. Existing street names and addresses will not change. A Street Renaming Ad Hoc Committee, made up of community members, reviewed several possible names before recommending Gutierrez. The committee presented its choice to the mayor and City Council at an Aug. 13 work session. Gutierrez later served on the Idaho Court of Appeals. During his career, he helped establish statewide standards for certified court interpreters, expanding access to the justice system for non-English speakers. He also mentored young people across Idaho. He was born into a migrant farmworker family and worked in Idaho’s fields as a child.

Civic Hope Project to bring Idaho’s top election official to Pocatello ahead of November election
POCATELLO — Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane will speak at a free community seminar Oct. 22, explaining how voters can find reliable information about candidates and ballot measures before the Nov. 3 general election. The event, “Election from Idaho: What Every Voter Should Know,” begins at 6:30 p.m. at the ICCU Bengal Alumni Center, 1601 E. Bonneville St. Doors open at 6 p.m. It is open to the public and hosted by the Idaho Civic Hope Project, a nonpartisan Pocatello nonprofit focused on civic education. McGrane, a Pocatello native and Republican, is the state’s chief election officer and is seeking reelection against challenger Shawn Keenan. Organizers said the program will cover the secretary of state’s role, election resources available on the office’s website and how to weigh candidates and propositions based on what each office can and cannot do. “We’re trying to help people understand where they can get good information that will be useful to them as they make these decisions,” said Justin Wood, a board member and co-founder of the Civic Hope Project. Wood said that voters generally know where to find coverage of presidential and congressional races, but far less is available on local and state

Opinion: Rep. Manwaring values data centers over voters’ wallets
When the Pocatello data center was announced, I was glad to see neighbors asking the right questions: What happens to our water? How does this help our economy?. Pocatello has three camps: people who don't want data centers anywhere, people who don't want one here and a small minority who do. I have yet to find a fourth camp, people who think data centers should be exempt from taxes.

Opinion: District 29 candidates for 'We the [working] People'
The majority of Pocatello, Idahoans work for a living. Collective bargaining by unions, as I wrote in April of this year (https://www.idahoednews.org/voices/workers-rights-and-union-strong/), is critical in supporting workers and working families. On November 3, 2026 (or before if voting in person early or absentee; see https://www.bannockcounty.gov/elections/ for more), we, the Working People of District 29, in the great state of Idaho, have a clear choice: three candidates ready and willing to work for the workers of Pocatello, Idaho. All three of these candidates are endorsed by the Idaho State AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations), representing the rights of working men and women of Idaho.

Groundbreaking marks start of River Sports Complex in Shelley
Years of work coalesced into a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for the first seven athletic fields in what will be a 72-acre River Sports Complex in Shelley. Residents within the Shelley school district voted to form a recreation district in 2022. They approved the North End Recreation District located on the edge of Shelley next to the Snake River in Bingham County. “Our purpose is to expand, beautify and grow the recreational opportunities in north Bingham County,” said Chris Sheetz, district executive director and owner and principal consultant of Peak Plus Partners. Through Peak Plus Partners, she manages and develops community initiatives and recreational programming specifically tailored to support the district’s operations and public projects. “This is an exciting day for our community,” Sheetz said, minutes before she and nine others involved in the planning each turned a scoop of dirt to mark the groundbreaking at 587 E 1250 N in Shelley. “We’re officially going to begin excavation for these seven fields now called the River Sports Complex. Today we get to stop talking and start digging.” The district was formed to address north Bingham County’s lack of sufficient athletic fields and large-scale public recreation spaces to meet the needs of
