Durham police officer fired after off-duty crash kills NC pastor
A Durham police officer was fired Wednesday, weeks after officials said he was involved in a crash that killed a Wayne County pastor and former sheriff’s deputy last month. Pastor Justin Heath was driving congregants home in a church van after a revival service on Oct. 17 when a vehicle ran a red light and collided with the van on the Johnston County/Harnett County line, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner . Off-duty Officer Joseph King, a corporal in the Uniform Patrol Bureau, was driving the vehicle that hit the van, authorities said. King, 52, was terminated Wednesday, according to Durham police, weeks after Police Chief Stephanie Mardis said DPD would conduct its own “internal review” of the incident, in addition to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol’s investigation into the crash. Mardis said in her statement that the department was “committed to fully understanding what occurred and ensuring that all appropriate actions are taken.” “Our personnel — whether on duty or off duty — are held to the highest standards of conduct,” Mardis wrote. “Any actions that violate the law or breach the public’s trust will be addressed promptly, transparently, and in accordance with departmental policies

Why DEQ let a Raleigh real estate agent take over a troubled Wayne County hog farm
A Raleigh real estate agent with no hog farming experience bought a Wayne County farm infamous for a massive 2022 waste spill, and it has kept leaking sludge into public waterways. State regulators approved his permit to run the site without a background check and have little power beyond issuing fines, which the owner hasn’t paid. FULL STORY: Why DEQ trusted a Raleigh real estate agent with the site of a massive hog waste spill Here are key takeaways: Wallace Green, a Raleigh real estate agent operating as Biox Renewables — a one-person LLC with no website or office — bought the former White Oak Farms at auction in 2024 despite never having run such an operation. The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality does not perform background checks or require financial disclosures from applicants. Spokesperson Josh Kastrinsky said the only confirmation sought was that Green had a registered LLC. DEQ has fined Biox three times this year — $10,697 in May, $7,347 in August and $5,280 in September — but Green hasn’t paid any of them and insists he’s “in compliance.” He is also over a year behind on required reports. Samantha Krop of Sound Rivers said testing of runoff
