Why DEQ let a Raleigh real estate agent take over a troubled Wayne County hog farm
A Raleigh real estate agent with no hog farming experience bought a Wayne County farm infamous for a massive 2022 waste spill, and it has kept leaking sludge into public waterways. State regulators approved his permit to run the site without a background check and have little power beyond issuing fines, which the owner hasn’t paid. FULL STORY: Why DEQ trusted a Raleigh real estate agent with the site of a massive hog waste spill Here are key takeaways: Wallace Green, a Raleigh real estate agent operating as Biox Renewables — a one-person LLC with no website or office — bought the former White Oak Farms at auction in 2024 despite never having run such an operation. The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality does not perform background checks or require financial disclosures from applicants. Spokesperson Josh Kastrinsky said the only confirmation sought was that Green had a registered LLC. DEQ has fined Biox three times this year — $10,697 in May, $7,347 in August and $5,280 in September — but Green hasn’t paid any of them and insists he’s “in compliance.” He is also over a year behind on required reports. Cary could get up to 400 new apartments - if the town says yes
A developer wants to build up to 400 apartments in a seven-story, mixed-use project on East Chatham Street in downtown Cary, but the site’s current zoning caps buildings at 45 feet. Developer Jeff Peterson has not filed a formal application. His team will meet with Cary’s Development Review Committee on Nov. 4 to review his plans before deciding whether to file a rezoning request , which would ultimately require Town Council approval. Preliminary plans include 13,000 to 14,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, about 12,000 square feet of amenities and a parking deck with roughly 492 spaces, he said. Cline architect Bryan Johnson said the firm’s preliminary studies show 350 to 375 apartments. Peterson said the project could approach 400 units depending on the height and density Cary ultimately approves. The firm has not yet designed the building’s exterior. The current concept wraps apartments and ground-floor retail around a roughly six-level parking deck. “The answer is always parking,” Johnson said when asked about the biggest design challenge. Why 45 feet matters The 3.6-acre site combines four parcels at 603, 605, 607 and 611 E. Chatham St . All four are zoned Town Center Mixed Use, which limits buildings to 45

A fragrance tenant left Southpoint. Why the Durham mall says it's owed over $620K
The Streets at Southpoint mall is suing a former tenant for unpaid rent and other claims, according to a complaint filed Monday in Durham County Superior Court. General Growth Properties (GGP), the shopping center’s landlord, alleges that Aroma360 Southpoint NC LLC owes over $623,000 in accrued and projected rent damages. The company operated Aroma360 Luxury Scenting store. The complaint says the tenant failed to pay rent and other charges and never paid the required $30,000 security deposit. The complaint also alleges $39,982 was owed through Sept. 30 and says Aroma360 LLC guaranteed the tenant’s lease obligations. GGP is asking Durham County Superior Court to hold Aroma360 and Aroma360 LLC jointly responsible for the unpaid money. The complaint says a separate eviction case resulted in a Sept. 14 possession judgment, and the tenant left the mall around Sept. 30. The lease covered about 1,760 square feet, with base rent starting at $6,600 a month and scheduled to increase to $7,428 in 2030, when the lease ended. A spokesperson for GGP told The News & Observer that they could not comment on the pending complaint and don’t comment on tenant relations. The N&O has also reached out to Aroma360 for comment on
