A former major-leaguer made his pitch to voters in Saline, and they elected him. Matt Shoemaker, who pitched nine seasons in Major League Baseball for three teams, was elected to the Saline Area Schools Board of Education on Tuesday, Nov. 3. He won one of three four-year terms up for grabs, and he won by a razor-thin margin, according to unofficial results out of Washtenaw County. Shoemaker, 40, received 6,598 votes with 100% of precincts reporting, putting him in third place among five candidates running for a four-year term. The top three vote-getters won four-year seats on the board. Shoemaker finished 28 votes ahead of Afifa Corrigan, who finished in fourth place. Carl Spina (8,528 votes) and Christy Lillie (8,169 votes) also were elected to four-year terms. In a separate election for a two-year term on the board, incumbent Tim Austin (7,456 votes) won that seat. Shoemaker and wife Danielle have four kids, 11 years old and younger, all enrolled in the Saline School District. Construction underway on two sounds walls along I-75 in Oakland Co. Find out where
TROY — Construction is underway on two sound walls along Interstate 75 in Troy following years of complaints from nearby residents and businesses about excessive noise. One 2,666-foot wall is being built from Wattles to Long Lake. The other wall, which will be more than 2,000 feet longer at 4,273 feet, is going up from Crooks to Coolidge. Construction started in April of this year, said Rob Morosi, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, and will take roughly two years. It's expected to wrap up in the fall of 2027. The walls are the result of a $10 million earmark in the 2024 state budget sought by state Rep. Sharon MacDonell and Sen. Michael Webber. MacDonell said in a post on social media that she was glad to see construction underway while driving through Troy late last month. "Securing $10 million in state funding for this project in 2023 is one of my proudest accomplishments during my time as your state representative, and I’ll keep working hard to bring more resources to our community for projects like this one," she wrote in a post on Facebook. MacDonell said it took years of advocacy by many, and that Troy
