Whitefish Ski Heritage Center presents 'Friedl'

The Ski Heritage Center Museum will host a special presentation of the new, award-winning documentary film "Friedl" at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center on Monday, Nov. 16. The film chronicles the extraordinary life of skiing pioneer Friedl Pfeifer, from his roots in Austria, to the front lines of World War II and his post-war role as a founding father of the modern American ski industry. After rising to become one of Europe’s top ski racers in his native Austria, Pfeifer fled to the United States to escape conscription into the Nazi military. Following the outbreak of WWII, he joined the U.S. Army’s famed 10th Mountain Division, training American troops in mountain warfare and skiing techniques at Camp Hale, Colorado. Deployed to the Italian front, Pfeifer's military service ended dramatically when he was nearly killed in battle—just a mountain range away from his homeland. Following his recovery, Pfeifer embarked on a career that transformed American skiing. His legendary contributions include: Co-Founding Aspen: Formed the Aspen Ski Corporation, co-founded the resort, and established the iconic Aspen Ski School. Creating Buttermilk: Founded Buttermilk Mountain as a family-friendly destination. National & International Leadership: Served as head coach for the U.S. Ski Team at both

Dog missing nearly three months found healthy

On Oct. 31, Rogue, the dog who has been on the run for 84 days was captured in a humane trap on Braig Road. The four-year-old collie mix had been on her own since being adopted from the Flathead County Animal Shelter on Aug. 8 and bolting from her newly adopted person's vehicle. Several reported sightings of the dog allowed searchers to walk nearby areas and to send drones up with hope of pinpointing her location. Casey Corbett is fostering Rogue's sister, Anna, and spent hours walking and looking, as part of a team on the ground who did not give up hope. Anna was present on Saturday morning when Rogue was collected from the trap and brought to Flathead Pet Emergency to be examined. She was found to be in relatively good condition. The report said she, surprisingly, had no injuries or broken teeth and was even at a healthy weight, despite having spent nearly three months on the run. Anna gives her sister, Rogue, a sniff after she'd been missing for nearly three months. (Photo provided)

They hang bird feeders on the deck so they can watch the birds and are enchanted by an almost nightly sighting of a doe and her twin fawns. Life is so peaceful. But then one night they are awakened by a terrible racket in the coop as the stillness of night explodes with the sounds of chickens squawking and the family dog barking. They discover that their wildlife neighbors also include hungry bears.

Stillwater River: Small Flies, Foggy Mornings, and a Race Against the Rain

Conditions on the Stillwater near Absarokee are optimal for early November, with low, clear water and good wading access. The best nymphing occurs from 7-11 AM, using small Baetis and midge patterns. As rain approaches midday, switch to dry flies and later to streamers for aggressive browns. Adapt strategies as conditions change.
